BALDWYN – The Baldwyn Bearcats never trailed for all four quarters, but it might have been too close for comfort as the West Point Green Wave made a late push.
The Bearcats, who’s lead was never more than 10, were carried behind Felix Hayes’ double-double and a near perfect free-throw performance by Conner McKay as they remained perfect through their first six games of the season, dispatching West Point (3-4), 57-47, in the Doc Vandiver Classic Saturday at Baldwyn High School.

BALDWYN — The Baldwyn Lady Bearcats overcame two second-half deficits to down the West Point Lady Wave, 55-47, Saturday at the Doc Vandiver Classic at Baldwyn High School.
“We didn’t execute at the end of the night,” Lady Wave Head Coach Dashmond Daniel said. “We never got into our press offense. Baldwyn’s full-court man threw our girls off on the court. I accept the effort. We just kind of fell apart midway through the second half.”

It was akin to a chess match.
One team would make a move, the other would answer with a counter attack. Not much separated Oak Hill and Jackson Academy (JA) Tuesday night, until JA Head Coach Bill Ball made the decision to switch to from a man-to-man defense to a zone defense that put a stop to any Oak Hill threat.
“It was a role of the dice,” Ball said about the decision to switch defenses.

The Oak Hill Lady Raiders have relied heavily on the offensive dominance that junior Sarah Dill has possessed in the opening games of the season. But one question had not been answered: What other player or players on the roster could carry the load if Dill, who is averaging close to 20 points per game, had an off night?
The Lady Raiders may have found their answer against a well-coached Starkville Academy team.

Brian Middleton has said that failure is the greatest teacher.
Middleton, the head coach at Oak Hill Academy, and his Raiders must have learned a great deal from their 58-46 loss to the Starkville Academy Volunteers on Nov. 13 in Starkville.
Oak Hill (5-3), who never trailed in four quarters, claimed redemption against Starkville with a 58-49 win Monday at OHA in West Point. Since the loss to the Volunteers two weeks ago, the Raiders have won three of their last four games, including Monday’s victory.
