Shaw lifts Eagles over Calhoun Academy 38-30

Friday night’s Hebron Christian Eagles (2-7; 0-2) and Calhoun Academy Cougars 1-9; 0-2) game was a wild one. It was an offensive shootout that finally ended with a 38-30 homecoming win for the Eagles.
For the first time in 2010, the Eagles dropped down to eight-man football, taking on a Cougar team that has played with those numbers all year.
“It was a typical eight-man game, where it’s stop me, and I’ll try to stop you,” said Hebron head coach Greg Watkins. “That’s the kind of a game it was.”

Marshall takes non-district game from Raiders 35-7

The Oak Hill Academy Raider (3-7; 1-1) played their final home game of the 2010 regular season on Friday night. Playing a very competitive Marshall Academy team (7-2), the Raiders were unable to overcome an early deficit, falling 35-7 to the Patriots.
The good news for the Raiders is that this game was not a district match. That will come in the final game of the season which will be next week.

West Point four to play All-Star games

With about three weeks left to go in the regular season, honors are already starting to pour in for players on the West Point Green Wave football team.
It was announced on Wednesday that senior defensive standout Tommy Keys and senior quarterback Justin Cox were selected to represent the state during the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star game.
The game will be played in Mobile on December 11.
“As a coach, you nominate as many players as you can,” Chambless said. “You hope you at least have one or two picked. We have two picked.”

Saltillo coming to town for district match with Green Wave

Almost two dozen seniors will be recognized on the field prior to tonight’s division game between the West Point Green Wave (7-1; 4-0) and the Saltillo Tigers (3-5; 0-4). Moments later, the 23 upper class men will be taking the home field for the final time during the regular season.
“Senior nigh is one of those things you dread as a player,” West Point head coach Chris Chambless said. “It’s the last time you play on your home field in a regular season game.”

Oak Hill welcomes Marshall, says goodbye to seniors

The Oak Hill Academy Raiders (3-6; 1-1) will look to make it two in a row against the Patriots of Marshall Academy (6-2; 2-1) tonight.
The two teams will go at in a non-district match that will include senior night for Oak Hill’s upper class men.
The final home game for the Raiders will be against a tough Marshall team that is riding a two-game win streak, both district games against Kirk and Indianola.
While the Patriots will be looking to get sharp for a likely playoff run, the Raiders’ playoff future lies at least a week away at Winston.

Eagles seek homecoming win

The Hebron Christian Eagles (1-7; 0-2) will be celebrating homecoming tonight, and they will be trying to get back on the winning side of the win-loss column for the first time since week three at West Memphis Christian School.
They will be taking on Calhoun Academy (1-8; 0-6) in a non-district battle tonight.
The Eagles are coming off one of their best efforts of the season, a league game against Immanuel last week.
During that game, Hebron was leading well into the fourth quarter, but they let a 22-14 lead slip away into a 35-22 loss to the Rams.

Cox, Keys Make Mississippi All-Star Roster

Late Wednesday afternoon, the roster for Mississippi’s All-Star football team was released for the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game that will be played December 11 in Mobile. West Point Green Wave players Tommy Keys and Justin Cox made the team’s roster. West Point head coach Chris Chambless will also be an assistant coach for Mississippi. A full story will appear in tomorrow’s paper.

Peewee football begins

The West Point Parks and Recreation Department kicked off its Peewee Football season on Tuesday night. Despite cloudy skies and a strong chance of rain, the bad weather held off for the four teams that went head-to-head.
“The rain held out,” said Parks assistant director Jarrod McDaniel. “It was a little damp, but it just settled the dust down.”
At 5:45, Sherman Berry’s team took the field against Leon Kelley’s crew. Berry’s team defeated their opponent 26-0.
An hour later, Will Ketchum’s team defeated Tim White’s bunch 20-6.

Tillman’s Students Excel at Tournament

Karate students from Tillman’s Karate School display the trophies they won at last Saturday’s Karate Tournament at the Bryan Union Hall. In front, from left are Collins Trolio (fourth in fighting, 6 years old),. Cohen Trolio (third in fighting, 8 years old) and Jack Ketchum (third in fighting, 5 years old). Standing are Tre Calvert (first in fighting, third in forms, 8 years old), Michal Gibson (fourth in fighting, 10 years old), Xavier Dobbs (third in forms, 8 years old) and Chris Gibson (third in weapons, third in fighting, 12 years old).

Seniors to play final game at Raider Field against Marshall

Last Friday night, The Raiders of Oak Hill Academy (3-6; 1-1) put on the best defensive show of the year for the home crowd in a 14-12 win over Kirk Academy. This week, they will face a tough Marshall Academy (6-2) team that will be Oak Hill’s final home game of the season.
That means that Friday night’s game will be senior night. A pre-game ceremony will honor Doss Miller and Jordan Hawkins, the two seniors on Oak Hill’s 2010 roster.
