Oxford wins late over West Point, 58-55

The Oxford Chargers (16-7; 3-1 District 2-5A) kept the game close throughout the night, but it was the final four minutes of the 32-minute game that lifted them to victory over the West Point Green Wave Friday night in West Point.
“We had the lead, and we get behind,” Oxford Head Coach Drew Tyler said. “We overcame late turnovers, and it is a good thing to win like this late in the season. This game was a good measuring stick for our team to be able to win on the road.”

The Starkville Yellowjackets used a big offensive third quarter and a 30 of 36 performance from the free-throw line, routing rival West Point, 89-55, in a MHSAA non-district game Tuesday night on the campus of West Point High School.
“It can be tough to come in here and put out the same effort,” Starkville Head Coach Greg Carter said. “You have to be mentally tough and physically strong. With so much basketball left, you can’t start slacking off.”

Legislature promotes concussion management policy for high school athletics

Head injuries in high school athletics, mainly concussions, have made headlines nationally and now the attention has turned to the state level.
House Bill No. 48, dealing with youth concussions in grades seven through 12 athletics, passed the Mississippi House and Senate and waits on action from Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant to enact it into law.

Raiders down Rebels, 65-45

CARROLLTON — Drake Riley scored 15 points on six of eight shooting, and the Oak Hill Raiders grabbed a 65-45 win over the Carroll Rebels in an MAIS non-district contest Saturday afternoon on the campus of Carroll Academy.
Blake Thomas notched 13 points as Oak Hill’s second leading scorer. Curt Huffman and Drew Riley added eight points each.
Clayton Harper recorded a double-double for Carroll, with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

West Point rallies late, downs Aberdeen

ABERDEEN — In the third meeting between West Point and Aberdeen, nothing much had changed between the two inter-county rivals – only the venue.
Two teams, state championship contenders in their respective classifications, concluded their regular season, non-district series with a classic finale.

OAK HILL SPLITS WITH CANTON IN DISTRICT 2-AA

The Oak Hill Lady Raiders (16-11; 5-4 District 2-AA) pieced together a team-effort win over the Canton Lady Panthers, 46-36, in the second leg of a MAIS District 2-AA on the campus of Oak Hill Academy in West Point.
Maegan Ellis led the Lady Raiders for a redeeming win over the Lady Panthers. Canton defeated Oak Hill on Jan. 10 in Canton, 35-34.

We are nearing the conclusion of the 2013-14 basketball campaign, and it should be an entertaining finish for our Daily Times Leader teams.
January represents the final month of the regular season – the final countdown per se. This month is the 31 days where non-district games become less important and district games become the key games on the docket. January is the month where postseason aspirations change in a matter of seconds before tournament-time in February.

Eagle woes continue in 2014, Wolverines shine

MATHISTON — Hebron Christian started the 2013-14 campaign with a near-perfect 7-1 overall record, which involved a three-win open to District 3-A.
The Eagles’ second half of the season has not started in similar fashion to the first.
Monday evening, Hebron (7-4; 3-1 District 3-A) dropped its third consecutive game in 2014 with a 64-37 loss to the East Webster Wolverines during an inter-association (MHSAA-MAIS) game on the campus of the Wood Institute.

Lady Wave splits weekend doubleheader in West Point

After leading Columbus by 11 points in the first quarter, the West Point Lady Wave watched its advantage vanish by halftime, and dropped a MHSAA non-district bout to the visiting Lady Falcons, 59-44, Saturday evening on the campus of West Point High School. The loss followed a narrow, 56-54 victory over the Aberdeen Lady Bulldogs Friday night at home.

Diquan Ewing swatted a Columbus shot attempt and recovered the block. The West Point senior center then flashed a pass to Tre Williams in transition who fed an alley-oop from the free-throw line to Demarius Calvert for a strong two-handed slam.
