Former Netters help capture titles

Two former Oak Hill tennis standouts took home MACJC/Region 23 titles in tennis last weekend on the campus of Gulf Coast Community College. Anna Ready and the Jones County Junior College Bobcats claimed the MACJC/Region 23 title Saturday as they posted 29 points on their way to their first title since 2010.
David McElwain and Itawamba Community College left little doubt as they took eight of nine of the single competitions, with McElwain winning No. 2 singles in the boys division and also posting a win in No. 2 doubles.

Lady Wave golfers look for state title

The West Point Green Wave girls golf team will travel to Holly Springs Monday and Tuesday to compete for a 5A state championship in golf. The Green Wave are coached by Brad Cox and Rachel Pate.
“Rachel Pate is our volunteer golf coach,” Cox said. “She knows a lot about the game and spends a lot of time with our girls. She really helps them with scholarship opportunities and is just an awesome coach.”
The three girls competing in state are Synethia Matthews, Ashley Johnson and Angelica Colbert.
Cox said Matthews is a great athlete who hits the ball well and enjoys the game.

Davis signs with Lions

West Point senior Juan Davis signed his letter of intent Monday morning to play basketball for the East Mississippi Community College Lions. After having an outstanding season in which he garnered District MVP honors, Juan will look continue his career next year for the Lions.
"Juan had a great year for us, and I'm excited that he gets to continue his basketball career at the next level. I will be watching and wishing him the best of luck," Head Coach Brad Cox said.

Yellow Jackets sting Wave, 5-2

STARKVILLE — The West Point varsity baseball team traveled to Starkville High Saturday afternoon to take on its Golden Triangle rival in non-district action.
The Starkville Yellow Jackets plated three runs in the first and never looked back, earning a 5-2 win over the West Point Green Wave despite being outhit five to four.
West Point had five hits from five different players with Bruce Barclay, Ryan Crowley and Jaylin White all singling, while Steffon Moore added an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Hebron wins big, looks toward playoffs

PHEBA — The Hebron Christian Academy Eagles won their final game of the regular season Friday night over the Kemper Academy Rams, clinching the No. 1 seed in the north heading into the 3-A playoffs.

Oak Hill tennis team falls to Manchester Academy

The Oak Hill tennis team dropped its first district match Monday afternoon 5-4 in West Point. It came down to the last match of the day and the Mavericks of Manchester Academy held off the Raiders to remain undefeated in district play.
“We played well despite the weather, but they are a really good team and have 11 returning seniors this year,” Coach Brian Middleton said. “I was pleased with how we competed on a nasty day.”
In boys’ singles, John Willis Stevens defeated Alex Dixon (6-1)(6-1) and Will Kelly defeated Matt Huggins (6-3)(6-7)(7-6) in a split set tiebreaker.

Wave’s Williams signs with ECCC

Senior West Point Guard Tre Williams inked with East Central Community College Tuesday morning after being named all-district last season averaging 9.75 points and four rebounds a game. Coach Brad Cox said that he thinks he can succeed at the next level because Williams is a solid, all-around player who shoots the ball well from the perimeter.
“I chose East Central because I like their coaching staff, and they seem to care a lot about their players and helping them be successful,” said Williams. “I just felt like it was a place where it could help me get better.”

Raiders win third straight in conference

The Oak Hill Raiders notched their third straight conference win — a 10-7 victory over the Leake Academy Rebels — Wednesday night to draw to an even 4-4 in District 2-AA. Led by a three-hit and four RBI performance from senior first baseman Joseph Caskey, the Raiders beat division rival Leake academy for the second consecutive night.

PHEBA — The Hebron Christian Eagles are now 5-0 in district play and picked up a 13-2 road division win behind four long balls from the Hebron bats. Channing Tapley, Brandon England, Landon Hill and Payton Griffin all earned home runs to propel the Eagles to the victory.
