Green Wave bb players earn all-district honors

After leading their basketball team to a 26-6 season, four West Point High School seniors have been named all-district by league coaches.

Juan Davis, A.J. Jones, Tre Williams and Demarius Calvert were instrumental in the team’s winning season, according to West Point High School Coach Brad Cox, who said he is proud of how each competed.

Baseball: the game of life

The grass is greener, the sky is bluer and spring is in the air. And if you’re anything like me that only means one thing: Baseball season is in full swing. Flashback about 14 years or so, and picture me a wild-eyed 9-year-old who could not wait to get on the field named after my granddaddy, Spanky Bruce, for opening day of city league baseball. As a kid, opening day of baseball was a lot like Christmas, but 10 times better.

Riley homers lift Raiders over Patriots

After falling to the Winston Academy Patriots Tuesday, 7 - 5, the Raiders were looking to bounce back in a rematch with their conference foe Wednesday night at home. Only starting 1-4 in District 2-AA, the Raiders were looking to show that they belong in the playoff conversation.

Henderson’s walk-off hit lifts Bulldogs

STARKVILLE — Demarcus Henderson had a paper due at midnight.
The Mississippi State senior outfielder made sure he had enough time to perfect it and turn it in on time.
Henderson had a walk-off single to score Zack Randolph from second base as the No. 16 Bulldogs beat Southeast Missouri 3-2 Tuesday night at Dudy Noble Field.
"I really didn't think he was going to score, but when (the outfielder) booted it, I was kind of happy because that gave him a little more time," Henderson said.
Henderson finished the night with two hits.

MSU defeats USM in WNIT to advance

Jerica James was making basketball plays all over the court when the Mississippi State Bulldogs needed them the most against Southern Mississippi Monday night.
She started it on defense with a key block of Gillom Trophy winner Jamierra Faulkner of the Golden Eagles with 24 seconds remaining in the first overtime and the Bulldogs holding a slim 65-64 advantage.
In the second overtime, James hit a big 3-point field goal to increase a two-point lead by MSU to 70-65.

Lane, Wave shut out Caledonia

The West Point Green Wave were at home playing Caledonia Saturday afternoon. The Green Wave pounded at 8 hits, and got 7 one-hit shutout innings from Rico Lane, who also added a double and drove in a run of his own. Steffon Moore led the team with 3 RBIs in the game going 1-3 with Jeffrey Drake also driving in a run. Ryan Crowley lead the wave with 2 hits while Bruce Barclay, Jeffrey Drake, Antonio Reese, and Jason Barnette all added hits for the Green Wave.
The West Point Green Wave travels to Saltillo Tuesday afternoon with a league game beginning at 7 pm.

Raiders win first conference game

The Oak Hill Raiders came to the ballpark Saturday afternoon at home looking to notch their first district win of the young season with a rematch against the Tri-County Rebels, who bested the Raiders in their first matchup 10-4. The Raiders did just that thanks to playing a solid all-around game, and a combined 11 runs in the third and fourth innings.

LOUISVILLE — The dynastic Oak Hill Netters returned to the action with a revamped look despite some old faces on the tennis courts in District 2-AA.
After an 8-1 loss to Class-AAA power Heritage Academy in the season opener, the Raiders downed the Winston Patriots in team match play, 6-3, in a District 2-AA opener for both teams Wednesday afternoon.
“It’s a little both new and old faces, but we revamped this season,” Oak Hill Head Coach Brian Middleton said. “Last year, we had a great and big senior class. But with that, you have to pay a price.

Lady Wave falls to Yellowjackets

STARKVILLE — The young and inexperienced West Point Lady Green Wave showed coach Brian Guy something to build on late in Tuesday night's 12-2 loss at Starkville.
Trailing 9-0 after four innings, the Lady Green Wave scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning to get to within seven runs.
It may not have seemed much to the average fan, but the way his team fought meant quite a bit to Guy.

Green Wave earns win over Wolverines
