As a new year has begun, many people await the many speeches from public officials and particularly President Barack Obama about the state of the union and even the state of their very own state such as in Mississippi. Governor Phil Bryant gave his âState of the Stateâ address yesterday; giving me reason to think what the state of Mississippi State basketball is? From a distance, one could say that this 2012-2013 season could possibly be the worst year of basketball Mississippi State (MSU, State) could possibly have.
After a thrilling victory against district-rival New Hope 67-63 Friday night, the Green Wave went on the road to face-off against long-time rival Starkville.
In the previous meeting between the Green Wave and Yellow Jackets on November 30, West Point was the victor after an edgy contest between two great foes 61-57. The win was the first over Starkville in ten years or more.
The Lady Wave entered the Beehive Saturday night at Starkville High following a district loss to New Hope on Friday night January 18. Though losing the night before, West Point looked ready to compete well facing their arch-rival the Lady Jackets.
With the regular season coming to a close, Brian Middleton is looking for his varsity squad to finish out strong. After winning two straight district games on Tuesday against Winston and a tough 54-52 win against Manchester in Yazoo City, the Raiders failed to bring the same energy and focus on Saturday against regional rival Starkville Academy, falling 56-37 in the contest
To cap off one of the last few weeks of the regular season, the Oak Hill Lady Raiders split a pair of games in two weekend contests, blowing the doors off of Manchester Academy Friday night before taking a 57-25 beating from top-ranked Starkville Academy Saturday evening.
All it took for a West Point victory was only two holds of the lead. The Green Wave had an infant lead to start the game 2-0 in the first quarter and the all-important lead takeover 64-61 after a Tre Williams three-pointer and free-throw with 2:16 left in the game.
The Lady Wave basketball team was at home Friday night playing host to district-rival New Hope. Both West Point and New Hope entered into the Friday match-up with perfect records in district 2 5-A and only one could leave without a blemish on their record.
Negative starts offensively for the Lady Wave allowed for the Lady Trojans to take a 12-0 run in the first quarter and never look back. New Hope continued to dominate throughout the game with the full-court press and great offensive play. The Lady Trojans were victorious over West Point 67-26 in district action.
Though the Tuesday night double-header against district-mate Oxford was canceled due to inclement weather, the West Point Lady Wave and Green Wave will finally return to the basketball court tonight. West Point will host the district-leading New Hope Lady Trojans and Trojans tonight and will look to put a blemish on the New Hope district records.
The Lady Raiders and Raiders will make the trip south to Yazoo City to take on Manchester Academy tonight.
In the last double-header the Lady Raiders and Raiders were both completely dominant over the Lady Mavericks and Mavericks as Oak Hill took care of business in both games. As the end of the regular is coming very soon, both Oak Hill teams will look to be victors in Yazoo City.
Sometimes a little boost of confidence is just the thing a team needs. After losing three straight games, the Raiders got just that Tuesday night in a blowout 72-50 victory over district opponent Winston Academy. Oak Hill used their whole bench in a night where the starters were greatly needed against the inferior Patriots. A killer transition game for the Raiders led to a 31-8 first quarter to put Winston away early, then the Raiders were able to put in several personnel groups to get some great game situation practice.
