December 5th
The Lady Wave took on the Noxubee County Tigerettes Tuesday night in West Point. West Point had a poor first half, but a better second half saw the Lady Wave fight back into the game. West Point was never able to close the Noxubee lead past 6 and fell to the Tigerettes 59-51.
After Friday’s big rivalry win over Starkville, the Green Wave returned to the court to take on Noxubee County. The Wave were in a tight affair, but were able to pull away in the fourth quarter winning the game 73-62.
“I was worried about how we would start the game,” commented Head Coach Brad Cox, “Two big rivals Starkville and Noxubee County in a row; I just did not know how we would come out tonight.”
Now that all of the high school football state championships have been played and everybody around the state has closed out their 2012 season, I wanted to look back at how well the young men of Clay County faired this past football season. All three Clay County schools (West Point, Oak Hill, and Hebron Christian) combined for a 25-11 record on the season, with two teams making the playoffs. The football teams in Clay County had grit and determination throughout the year. Taking on tough opponents, Clay County usually came away the victors.
December 3rd
Sometimes it’s the little things that do the most damage. That was certainly the case Thursday night for the Oak Hill Raiders in a 44-41 loss to Kirk Academy. Turnovers and free-throw shooting plagued the young team in a contest with plenty of opportunities to pull out the win. The Raiders gave the ball away 22 times, while only shooting 15-30 from the charity stripe.
Two nights after a blowout win over Heritage, Oak Hill hit the road again for a tough battle against Kirk Academy. In a 52-40 win for the Lady Raiders, the game was never decided until the very end. Despite a dismal first half, Stan Hughey’s squad never let the game slip out of reach and finally took the driver’s seat on their way to a solid victory against a very competitive team.
December 1st
Thursday night, West Point played host to the Okolona Chieftains. Also on Thursday, the Wave welcomed back their football players to the court. The Green Wave outscored the Chieftains 23-7 in the second quarter allowing for West Point to pull away and control the rest of the game. The Wave defeated Okolona 68-38. The top scorers for West Point against Okolona were Juan Davis (12 points), Tre Williams (10 points), and A.J. Jones (8 points).
Hebron Christian opened up their Region 3 campaign against the region-favorite Winona Christian Thursday night. It took more than four quarters for Gary Vaughn and his Eagles and their electric fans to get by the Stars. A Troy Arnold put-back in overtime gave Hebron all they needed with a 54-52 victory.
“It was a big district win for us,” commented Coach Vaughn after the win, “I’m just real proud of them, this was a team victory.”
In the opening game of the MAIS Classification A District 3 games, Hebron Christian played host to Winona Christian on Thursday. Head Coach William Cotton was absent due to an illness, leaving the Lady Eagles under the direction of Assistant Coach MP.
The Lady Eagles stayed competitive with Winona only trailing the Lady Stars by 5 points at halftime. The second half was a different story as Hebron was unable to cope with Winona’s full court press and were routed 56-28.
On Thursday night, the Lady Wave played one of their better games of the season so far. West Point played host to Okolona and defeated the Lady Chieftains 55-39. West Point had excellent bench play as the subs scored a combined 23 points. Qiayon Bailey led the Lady Wave against Okolona with 23 points. Also leading in scoring were Alexis Gates 9 points, Tyshia McCurry with 6 points, and Anqulisha Evans with 5 points.
November 29th
The West Point Green Wave and Lady Wave will play host in an important rivalry game tonight against Starkville High School. The Lady Jackets will get things started against the girls of West Point at 6 p.m.
The boys will follow with their game immediately following that action.
