Summer baseball is in full swing at West Point High School.
With nearly all their starters returning to the diamond next spring, this summer is the perfect opportunity to tweak a few issues that might have plagued the team in 2010. West Point last season finished 15-12 and were eliminated in the second round of the 5A state playoffs after back-to-back losses to eventual champion Ridgeland.
Green Wave head coach Buddy Weyers and his staff have gone back to a two-team varsity system which allows every kid the chance to play.
Dozens of cowboys and cowgirls will be strapping their steers and dusting their hats in preparation for the Mcllwain Junior Rodeo this Saturday at Rockin' Mc Arena in Cedar Bluff on the farm of Jim and Vicki Mcllwain.
Saturday's event is the third in a summer series of rodeos that will be held once a month until August.
Vicki says there are a lot of kids in the area that are interested in participating in rodeos and this is a perfect way to come out and have fun.
The Benjie Merchant era has officially begun at Oak Hill Academy.
Tuesday evening, coach Merchant and his new staff were introduced to several parents and students at the football field.
Merchant, a Laurel native, said the opportunity to come back closer to home was just too good to miss.
âThe passion for Mississippi football is like no other,â he said. âI missed that.â
Oak Hill headmaster Bill Miley said the school is very excited to have him on board.
