December 12th
BATESVILLE - Oak Hill never trailed in Saturdayâs ball game against North Delta Academy.
A 22-point first quarter performance didnât hurt their chances either as the Raiders downed the Green Wave 46-42 to pick up their second win in a row and second this season over North Delta.
Itâs the second time this season the Raiders, 7-6, 1-1 have won back-to-back games since a three game streak in November with victories over Heritage, Carroll and North Delta.
MACON - West Pointâs girls basketball team didnât have a single player score in double digits Saturday as the Green Wave dropped their second in a row 60-35 to Neshoba Central in the Noxubee County Invitational.
Wilma Davis and Adrianna Billups had eight points apiece to lead the girls who âcame out flatâ head coach Murray Woody said.
âWe just didnât play well, we couldnât get any shots,â he said. It was their fourth loss in the last five games.
The Green Wave (5-6) were held to just six points in the opening quarter, and by halftime the deficit grew to 13-points, 29-16.
December 10th
Oak Hillâs Lady Raiders didnât hold Winston to under 20-points Friday night, but they came close.
Nonetheless, a 67-32 win over the Lady Patriots moved them to 2-0 in the district as they continue their quest for a third straight district title.
After scoring 23-points in the opening quarter, Oak Hill (11-3) never trailed in the ball game and by half time had a comfortable 41-14 lead.
On any given night, you can find Wilma Davis scoring at least 10-points, most nights its a little more.
Friday, the senior finished with 15 to help stop a three-game losing streak following a 68-51 win over Aberdeen.
Head coach Murray Woody said her confidence has been a little shaken lately, but that hasnât stopped her leading the team in scoring every night.
âI keep telling her, âkeep shooting, because shooters go through slumpsâ,â he said.
If her 15-points was a slump, it was enough to help West Point (5-5) get their first victory in almost two weeks.
December 9th
Nearly a full slate of basketball will be in store this weekend for area teams here in Clay County.
All three schools will be in action tonight in some capacity with Oak Hill and West Point on the road on Saturday. Hebronâs junior high teams will be in Oxford.
West Point
West Point finally snapped a three-game losing skid this week with a 68-65 win over Noxubee County. The boys, now 4-5, topped the Tigers in Macon for the first time in almost a decade.
Accolades aside, head coach Brad Cox said the win was more important.
December 7th
Hebron Christian earned their first conference win of the season in the heels of a defensive effort that netted 22 total steals, 49-39 over Calhoun Academy.
The victory snapped another two game skid for the Eagles who improved to 5-4 on the season and 1-1 in 3A action.
âIt was a slow defensive game, both of us were in a zone,â head coach Tri Nason explained. âOnce we started shooting from the outside, they switched to man and that loosened them up the rest of the game. We started stealing, driving and making easy lay-ups.â
STEENS - Rachel Herndon was lights out.
With 16 points including four from the 3 point line, Herndon helped lead the Lady Raiders to their 10th win on the season following a 49-17 win over Immanuel Christian in Class 2 district 2 play Tuesday night.
âIt was nice to see Rachel come around,â head coach Stan Hughey said. âShe was in a bit of a shooting slump and she shot real well for us.â
MACON - West Point sophomore Tre Williams had 11-points in the Green Waveâs 68-65 win over Noxubee County Tuesday night.
No, he wasnât the leading scorer, but when it comes to being clutch, he was almost perfect.
Trailing by four with three minutes left to play, Noxubee were almost in panic mode to try and mount a come back. Williams, who came in the game after Cortez Malone fouled out, was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line with under a minute left to play to ice the victory. He finished 6-of-8 in the fourth quarter.
West Point was highly represented on the 2011 5-A Region 1 squads recently selected by the coaches from each school.
In all, the Green Wave had 17 players honored including 10 on the offensive side of the football, the most of any team in the district.
SCOOBA â Before East Mississippi hoisted their first ever football national championship, the coaches knew it was going to be a slugfest. Both the Lions and Matadors were ranked nationally in offense and featured some of the countryâs top talent in every position.
EMCC secondary coach Clifton Collins knew it was going to be a battle from the opening kickoff.
âThey got some great players on offense,â he said. âWeâre not taking anything away from what they can do, but we made some mistakes and took some bad angles against their running back and he scored four touchdowns on us.â
