As the Division 1-5A schedule turns the corner and heads for home, the West Point High School football team finds itself in a familiar spot:
Undefeated within the district, and in control of the division race entering the homestretch.
Since joining the division in 2008, West Point is a perfect 19-0 against district opponents, and are outscoring division foes by an average of 21 points in that span.
Tonight, the two-time defending state champs will look to continue their stranglehold on Division 1-5A when they host Saltillo for homecoming, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
Hebron can write their own history this week.
The Eagles finish the 2011 season tonight at home against Calhoun Academy and although it doesnât have any playoff implications, in some ways it feels like it does.
âWe have a shot at a winning season,â head coach Tri Nason said. âThatâs more than any other teams have had since Iâve been here. Friday night we get to write our own history. Are we going to be the team that starts getting Hebron on the right track thatâs winning, or are we going to
fall in âalmost there but not quite.ââ
Itâs come down to one moment, one chance to qualify. No restarts or do overs. And for five young athletes on the West Point Swimming team, they want to make the most of it.
Saturday, Kelsey Redus, Isabel Facella, Jessica Farr, Abby Scott and alternate Katie Wilson will don their swimming caps and hit the pool at Courthouse Racquet and Fitness in Flowood for the MHSAA North State championships.
West Point, known for football and basketball prospects over the years, has had swimmers make it this far, but this is a first for these girls and they want to make the most of it.
