Construction is going well at both Church Hill and South Side Elementary Schools. New safety precautions are being implemented to assure the identity of visitors before having access to classrooms or children. New entrances are being built so that anyone entering the building will have to come through the office and present identification. Intercoms are posted outside the doors and the public will have to be buzzed in to gain access to the schools.
The Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are a wonderful time to get together with family and friends. Both holidays always involve food, a LOT of food. You get invited to people’s homes with one thing in mind, to eat. Everyone who cooks pulls out all the stops and shows off their flair for the decadent. It’s the one time of the year that you may make sausage cheese balls, spinach dip, cookies and homemade candy and have them all in one day! Emails come bearing recipes from the 12 days of cookies, people are posting photos and recipes of their own family favorites on Facebook.

These moments teach valuable lessons, and they often serve to prepare these individuals for their leadership roles.
For Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott, the storm outbreak of April, 2011 shined light on his talents as a law enforcement officer, and it exposed some weaknesses in local emergency response which Scott began to address as soon as he was elected the following November.

West Point, MS - In an effort to empower community youth, Sally Kate Winters Family Services is now offering a free leadership program to teens 12-17 years old during the afterschool hours. Parents and teachers are encouraged to refer students to the program that will provide two hours (3:30 p.m. - 5:30p.m.) of supervised leadership building activities, such as independent-living skills, educational encouragement, problem solving, character building, personal responsibility, and community service opportunities.

The Mississippi Main Street Association (MMSA) honors the life of longtime friend and architect Samuel “Sam” H. Kaye, AIA, who went home to be with the Lord on January 1, 2013.
Since 1994, Kaye served as Staff Consultant to the Mississippi Main Street Association, working with towns throughout Mississippi. He served as MMSA Director of Design Services until 2007—in addition to running his own architectural firm, Luke Peterson Kaye, Architects.

There has never been a shortage of news in West Point and Clay County in the past.
2012, however, proved to distinguish itself as far as newsworthy stories are concerned.
This year was truly a banner year for this community, as we saw the West Point/Clay County Growth Alliance forge a partnership with the Columbus/Lowndes Development LINK in the Spring, which by September had inspired leaders in Clay, Lowndes and Oktibbeha Counties to drive toward an economic partnership that would encompass the entire Golden Triangle region.

America Reads tutors at West Clay Elementary School decided to teach the students about the true meaning of Christmas. Beverly McKinney and Wyvonia Webb organized a Can Food Drive to help the student to realize the importance of giving back. The drive was held December 10 - 21. The students at West Clay Elementary did a fantastic job. They collected a total of 240 cans of food items to be given to the Clay County Food Pantry to assist those who are less fortunate. WEST POINT, -Justin Wofford got possibly the most unusual Christmas present ever from his new friend, Jimmy Gentry of Las Vegas. But it’s one that he nor Gentry will ever forget.
Gentry, 46, grew up in Los Angeles, moved to Tampa, Fla., and then settled in Las Vegas about eight years ago. His parents, Bill and Sandy, retired to West Point several years ago.
