No one injured as city truck catches fire

July 16, 2013

A city of West Point meter reader is OK today after the city truck he was driving caught fire Tuesday at a residence on Waverly Road. West Point firemen rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire, which destroyed the front half of the truck. Battalion Chief Ronnie Robinson said the meter reader noticed smoke coming from the truck, stopped and notified 911. Robinson said the exact cause of the fire could not be determined due to the extent of damage, though the fire is believed to have started underneath the hood of the truck. The truck had been used by the city for nearly 30 years.

Warrant issued for Thompson’s arrest

A bench warrant was issued Tuesday for the immediate arrest of Roderick Thompson, who failed to appear in Clay County Circuit Court.

Judge Finds "Open Carry" Bill Unconstitutional

Hinds County Judge Winston L. Kidd ruled Friday that House Bill 2, which deals with openly carrying weapons, is unconstitutional and would pose great harm to the law enforcement community and the public.
According to Kidd's order granting injunctive relief, no case law exists giving a person an absolute right to openly carry a weapon. Kidd says the language in the Second Amendment, “to keep and bear arms” does not mean a person is allowed to walk the streets, under any circumstances, carrying guns.

Murder Case To Be Heard Monday

Fluoride Concern Arises Again

The fight to take fluoride out of West Point's water supply is still ongoing, and members of the West Point Board of Mayor and Selectmen listened tentatively Tuesday to the issue concerning fluoride.
West Point residents Chad Scott and Vaughn Blaylock appeared before the board, stating their case that the use of fluoride in the city's drinking water is harming the community's health.
