Officials caution against realistic BB guns

August 19, 2014


Local law enforcement officials are warning West Point and Clay County residents against the use and display of BB guns, pellet guns or toy guns that look like actual firearms.
West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley said the West Point Police Department is encouraging parents not to buy these type of guns for their kids, and if the parent knows the child has one, to not let them leave the home with it.

Four years ago, the Golden Triangle community got a lifeline in the way of resident support through Celebrate Recovery, a nonprofit organization devoted to providing a community in which participants struggling with a number of life’s ails may find strength and safety. Pilot Club enjoys sweet fundraiser among members

The Pilot Club of West Point held a dessert/white elephant auction after the conclusion of the business meeting Tuesday night in the dining room of the Henry Clay Retirement Center in West Point.
“This is always a fun way to raise a little money in – house,” Sandra Cox, member of the fundraising committee, said. “People bring either a dessert or a decorative or household item for the members to bid on. Sometimes the bidding gets a little heated, but everyone laughs a lot and has a good time.”

Local police investigate burglaries

Investigators with the West Point Police Department are looking for any information regarding three burglaries which took place throughout the last week in July.

EMA looks at new alert system

City and county officials are looking to bring a new weather and emergency notification system to residents in the community. The Code Red system is a mass information system designed to enable local government officials to record, send and track personalized messages to residents within minutes.
Clay County Emergency Management Director Kerrie Gentry-Blissard said officials in the county wanted to institute a new notification system, and looked at three different vendors: Code Red, CivicReady and Everbridge Unified Critial Communication Suite.

City levies $5.8 million for WPSD

The West Point Board of Selectmen voted to levy $5,868,600 in ad valorem taxes for the West Point School District at its meeting Tuesday night. The amount will be for general district purposes, along with $322,889 for debt services.
West Point Mayor Robbie Robinson said the board will convene later in the month to set the millage rate to acquire the ad valorem tax. The school’s request was down from $5,827,000 last year, according to Robinson.

Over-odorized gas raises alarm

Some West Point residents may have been alarmed this by the strong smell of natural gas in and around their homes. However, Atmos Energy officials have assured customers that there is no cause for concern.
Atmos Operations Manager Michelle Whittle said the company’s gas substation in Aberdeen, which feeds to lines in West Point, was over-odorizing the gas.
“Natural gas doesn’t have a smell or a taste,” Whittle said. “We have to odorize the gas so our customers will be able to smell it if they have a gas leak.”
