Arrest made in restaurant assault

Police have made an arrest in connection with a weekend assault that left a West Point man hospitalized with a brain injury.
According to a statement issued by West Point Police Department, investigators arrested Courtez, McMillian, 22, of Okolona on Monday pending charges of aggravated assault. He was housed in the Clay County Detention Center awaiting arraignment.
More arrests are pending, according to West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley.

Police have made an arrest in connection with a weekend assault that left a West Point man hospitalized with a brain injury.
On Monday, police arrested Courtez McMillian, 22, of Okalona in connection to an alleged aggravated assault on Ralph Weems IV, 32, of West Point.

New details released on restaurant assault

West Point Police Department is investigating an aggravated assault that occurred at the Huddle House Restaurant early Saturday morning. Police were dispatched to the scene at 2:10 a.m. in reference to a fight in progress. Once at the business located at 230 Highway 45 Alternate North, officers discovered an injured man in the parking lot and what appeared to be two other individuals rendering aid.

Mississippi Health Care Foundation donates laptops to local senior citizens

Myrtle Robinson, certified activities director at West Point Community Living Center (WPCLC) saw a need arise when the public computer at the skilled nursing facility stopped functioning. She sent an application on behalf of residents 67-year-old Milford Taylor and 77-year-old Lillian Holloman to Mississippi Health Care Foundation (MHCF) requesting personal laptops for the two residents. The MHCF helps to enhance the quality of life for nursing home residents.

Police seeking information on burglaries

West Point Police Department investigators are looking for information on a trio of crimes from July 2013, including two alleged robberies and a hit-and-run.

County unemployment drops

According to a report from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security (MDES), the unemployment rate for Clay County is down compared to last year.
The unemployment rate was 20.1 in July 2013 and, according to the report, is down to 18.1 for July 2014, and the lowest it has been since 2009.

Jackson addresses Civitans, outlines activities at Dugan Memorial Home

Jackie Jackson has been with Dugan Memorial Home in West Point for 14 years. She began her career at Dugan as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant (CNA) in 2000. She was offered a position as assistant to the activities director. When the activities director resigned, Jackson was offered the position of activities director herself.

Crash closes West Point Hibbett

A Clay County man is in the custody of the West Point Police Department after crashing his Ford Explorer into the front window of Hibbett Sports Wednesday afternoon in West Point.
The man drove over the sidewalk and into the concrete and glass facade of the store a little after 3 p.m.
WPPD Chief Investigator Albert Lee said no one was injured in the crash, and the driver was taken to the police department for questioning. The name of the driver was not released as of press time Wednesday.

Main Street road work finishing up

West Point residents traveling on East Main Street have likely noticed crews working on the sewer lines in the street in front of Sunflower, and may be happy to know their detouring days are winding down.
West Point Water and Light Superintendent Dwight Prisock said he expected the sewer line repair, a two-and-a-half month process, to be complete by Wednesday afternoon.
“There were a lot of unhappy residents that will be very happy we’re done,” Prisock said. “None of them will be as happy as I am.”
