Doris Williams has been making women beautiful for 50 years and wants West Point to celebrate this milestone with her. She is having an Open House, Sunday, November 25, from 2 – 5 p.m. at Lady Doris Salon of Beauty, 110 E. Main St. in the downtown district of West Point.
Williams graduated in 1962, from Jetty's Beauty School, historically located on Fifth St. She spent her formative years perfecting her craft under the loving and skillful guidance of the late Corine King at Madame King's Hair Fashions of Chicago, Illinois. King was the beloved cousin of Williams.

County Extension Director Donna Cliett spends many of her waking hours putting food packages together at the West Point Food Pantry inside the old Mary Holmes College gymnasium.
The food assortments are put together by volunteers and are provided monthly to 439 Clay County families who are in need. That’s almost 800 people total.
This holiday season the Food Pantry is not just in need of food and donations to keep local families fed, but the institution that has been around for over 15 years needs volunteer labor.
Labaris “LB” Conner is a testament that patience does pay off.
Sitting in his office at West Point’s Kroger grocery store on Monday, Conner recalled how in 1996 he was given a shot at bagging groceries at his local Kroger in Columbus. Today he’s the head man in charge in West Point’s store, and besides trying to get the local store into the black budget-wise, Conner has an opportunity to give local teenagers the same shot at a career he got 16 years ago.
“I could have 20 people here,” Conner said. “I may get three out of those 20, but if I can reach those three, my job is done.”

Residents of Westwood 2 may soon have only one way to access their homes if a petition to block access from Westwood 1 to Westwood 2 is approved by West Point city officials.
When you hear of an 18-wheeler colliding near the highway with a van full of passengers, the thing that usually comes to mind is a horrific scene of severely injured victims, some of whom could have unfortunately been killed.
But thankfully this wasn’t the case Friday morning when emergency officials responded to the scene of an accident involving two 18-wheeler trucks and a Community Counseling van carrying at least six passengers.

Quick-N-Easy, located on Brame Ave. in West Point, is at risk of going out of business if the Clay County Circuit Court decides to execute its order of default judgement to Roshunda Duncan, who sued the store in 2008 after being injured there the year before.
In her 2008 complaint, Duncan alleges that Quick-N-Easy employee Mohmed Algafaz approached her and began pulling on her, and in her attempt to get him to stop Algafaz allegedly cut Duncan’s wrist with a box cutter.

It’s a question state educational leaders hope they have found the answer to at Central School, which has been under a full-scale assessment over the last few weeks in an attempt to assist the school in reaching higher levels of academic achievement.

Many times on Veterans’ Day, there is no shortage of recognition for soldiers who fought in the two World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and even the first Gulf War.
For this Veterans’ Day, West Point has had the privilege to honor soldiers who have sacrificed over the last decade, even in the last year.
On Friday, West Point honored the men and women of the 223rd as Veterans of the Year.
Some days the lobby of the Clay County Sheriff’s Department may have only one or two individuals waiting patiently to speak to a deputy or to visit an inmate. Other times the lobby may be packed full.
And that’s the primary reason Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott decided to establish a new public entrance to the Clay County Detention Center, now located on the west side of the Sheriff’s Department instead of the front.
At least 10 rounds of gunfire were reportedly heard Monday in the area of Brame Ave. near Marston Court Apartments where West Point police quickly responded to see if anyone had been injured.
Thankfully, when officers responded around 1:30 p.m., they found that no one had been injured but spoke with several individuals on scene to gather additional information about the incident. Shortly after interviewing several people, West Point investigators searched the area and found about five shell casings along Brame Ave.
