District 37 Representative Gary Chism has been a proponent of charter schools since the idea was first brought to the state capitol.
Chism sees charter schools, not as a fix-all for the state’s education problems, but rather as a chance for parents and students in “failing” school districts to have new opportunities in education.
“The current bill is going to be very limited,” Chism said of the House bill that passed Thursday morning, which is different from the Senate bill that was passed last week. “It will only allow for 15 charter schools to be created each year.”
It is probably one of the most contentious issues that the Mississippi legislature has dealt with in decades.
Right now, the Senate and the House of Representatives are debating as to whether the state should expand “school choice” for parents and allow more charter schools to exist, especially in failing districts.
The House did not leave the capitol until the early hours of Thursday morning, but the divided body finally put the current bill to a vote, passing it 64-55.
January 23rd
West Point author, Bobby Cole was happy to share his latest novel, “Moon Underfoot” a sequel to “The Dummy Line,” at Wednesday’s Luncheon with Books.
This is Cole’s second offering at Luncheon with Books. He was guest speaker February 2009, when he talked about his first published novel, “The Dummy Line.” Cole has since written a book called “Rent a Mule” that should be available in the Fall.

One adult and three juveniles are now in the custody of the Clay County Detention Center after allegedly being involved in an armed robbery incident that the victims say took place on Grove Street.
Shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday night, West Point police were dispatched to Grove Street and spoke with two men, who reported to officers that four male subjects who all had guns approached them and started making demands for goods.
Spring is one of the most anticipated seasons out of the year.
Flowers begin to bloom, trees start to turn green again, and kids relish the week of Spring Break activities away from school.
One of the only negatives during the Spring season is that mid-April day when income taxes come due.
April 15 marks the end of the road for procrastinating taxpayers, but H&R Block wants to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to get those i’s dotted and t’s crossed before then.

It’s been 50 years since Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered the nation’s most famous speech of peace and justice, but if Dr. King was alive today could he look around proudly and say that his dream of peace, unity and justice has truly been fulfilled?
Well, not exactly, said Rev. Dr. Clementine Mays, pastor of Poplar Springs CME Church, who said even though King would be delighted to see some broken down racial barriers today and signs of unification things just aren’t quite where King dreamed of them to be.

Luncheon with Books is proud to announce author Bobby Cole will be at the January 26, luncheon to share his newest novel “Moon Underfoot.”
“It’s been a  few years since you read “The Dummy Line” and now I’m excited to share that I have a new story entitled “Moon Underfoot” that releases this week.  It’s a sequel to The Dummy Line,” said Cole. “Here is a teaser to let you know what the book is about.”

Earl Banks was elected to District 67 of the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1993, the same year David Gibbs took office for District 36.
During the two decades the two men served together, they grew to not only be political colleagues, but also friends.
Banks was the first to offer tribute to the late Rep. Gibbs during a memorial service held yesterday morning in honor of the Clay County native. The service was held at Third Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in West Point.
