Selectmen set to tap school board members

The West Point Board of Selectmen will appoint three members to the new West Point Clay County Consolidated School District Board during its meeting tonight at City Hall.
The State of Mississippi passed legislation in 2013 to consolidate the West Point and Clay County School Districts into the new West Point Consolidated School District.

Yokohama preps to hire 400 more

With the scheduled opening of the Yokohama Tire plant less than a year away, the company hosted an employment informational session Saturday at the Civic in West Point. It was standing room only as about 1,000 prospective employees and community members crowded the Civic auditorium.
Yokohama Tire Manufacturing Mississippi President Tadaharu Yamamoto said the company planned to invest not only in its facility’s future, but in its employees as well.

Local police investigate burglaries

West Point Police Department investigators are looking for information on two alleged burglaries and an alleged case of vandalism from last week.
n About 3:30 p.m., Oct. 28, officers were dispatched to the 500 block of South Division Street in reference to an alleged home burglary. According to the incident report, the homeowner arrived to find two flat-screen Samsung televisions allegedly stolen. The owner was unable to provide model and serial numbers for the televisions.

Yokohama boulevard nears end; N. Eshman closed for three weeks

The Clay County Board of Supervisors announced that a portion of North Eshman Avenue near Yokohama Boulevard will be closed for the next three weeks at its meeting Thursday. Eutaw Construction crews began working Thursday to install storm drains for the new road.
District 1 Supervisor Lynn Horton said the closure will affect North Eshman north of the National Guard Armory to just south of Hazelwood Road.

Local church keeps West Point tradition with Harvest Festival

Northside Christian Church is hosting its annual Harvest Festival at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Mary Holmes College Auditorium in West Point. Northside Christian Church has sponsored the festival for more than 10 years, according to Dorothy Ryland, coordinator for the event.

State re-elects Cochran, four incumbents

JACKSON — Mississippi voters on Tuesday re-elected Republican Sen. Thad Cochran and all four incumbent congressmen.
Cochran, 76, said he intends to serve the entire six-year term. With Republicans taking over the Senate, he could become a committee chairman. He is a former Appropriations chairman, and has steered billions of dollars to the state for hurricane recovery, university research and other projects.

School board race heads to Nov. 25 runoff

The dust has settled from the November general election, and Clay County voters cast their ballots in several statewide and local elections Tuesday.
Local voters had the opportunity to elect two members to the new West Point Consolidated School District Board. The State of Mississippi passed legislation to consolidate the West Point and Clay County School Districts in 2013.

Christmas open house set for Sunday

The holiday season is rapidly approaching, and West Point businesses are more than ready.
West Point's annual Christmas open house will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, and West Point Clay County Growth Alliance Director Lisa Klutts said the open house would feature plenty of old favorites, as well as a few new surprises.

Yokohama to host info session

Yokohama Tire Manufacturing Mississippi (YTMM) will host an employment informational session from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the Civic in West Point.
Representatives from Yokohama will be on hand to discuss the company’s recruitment process, as well as training and application requirements. YTMM President Tadaharu Yamamoto will also provide the community with information about the company’s progress in Clay County.
