County appoints 2 to LINK board

The Clay County Board of Supervisors appointed two residents to the Golden Triangle Development LINK oversight board at its meeting Thursday. The board, comprised of four members from each LINK county, meets once a month with LINK CEO Joe Max Higgins to keep the counties informed about economic development in the area.
West Point Mayor Robbie Robinson, who previously served on the board, said it’s responsible for setting and approving policy for the LINK.

Clay County Institute of Community Service Head Start (CCICSHS) welcomed several guests during Spirit Day Wednesday. The West Point High School Green Wave football team, cheerleaders, drum line, Greenie the mascot and the Slab Bandits Motorcycle Club visited the Head Start center in support of Spirit Day.

County AmbuBus installed, in service

Representatives from the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) were in town Wednesday to install the Clay County Emergency Management Association’s new AmbuBus kit. The AmbuBus is a kit retrofitted to an existing bus and used for mass evacuation and transport of special needs patients, casualties and others who require non-ambulatory transport during an emergency situation.

Mikayla Poindexter is more than the average 15-year-old girl. The sophomore student at Oak Hill Academy is working toward earning honors in the Miss Outstanding Teen pageant series in Mississippi, but more than that, she's working to make a difference in the lives of sick children.

Brittania Smith came before Judge Lee Howard for a hearing during Wednesday’s session of the October Clay County Circuit Court term. Smith, 24, of West Point, will go to trial in January in connection with the December death of her 2-month-old-son, Brinston Smith.

Domestic violence remains issue in Clay County, state

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and according to local officials, domestic problems is a problem in West Point and Clay County, as well as Mississippi as a whole.
According to a statement released to media from the Mississippi Department of Health (MDH), domestic violence plays a significant role in the health of Mississippians.

Local youth sentenced to 15 years

A West Point man was sentenced to 15 years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections with five suspended for statutory rape during the Clay County Circuit Court session Monday.
Khaleed Pigram, 17, of West Point, originally pleaded not guilty to the 2012 rape of a child younger than 14-years-old at the time. He changed his plea to guilty during the January court term, and Judge James Kitchens sentenced him Monday.

Screams, chainsaws and maniacal laughter will greet those to dare to visit “A Nighmare on Highway 45” haunt during the Halloween season. For the third year, Tim White, Keith Bagwell, Eddie Malone and a dozen volunteers put together a haunted walk–through behind Cathy’s Restaurant in West Point.
