Area schools set for statewide tornado drill

West Point residents can expect to be greeted by the familiar sirens of warning as the state partakes in a statewide tornado drill scheduled to occur 9:15 a.m. Wednesday.
As November creeps up, so too does the frequency of tornadoes that will inevitably leave their marks on Mississippi’s wide open terra.
According to a press release provided by the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), between 1950 and 2012, 229 tornadoes struck in November alone.

Churches host Harvest Fest alternative to Halloween

The concept of Halloween has often been greeted with mixed emotions, but some of West Point’s citizens are hoping to change that. This year, area churches and pastors banded together to start what they hope to be an annual tradition: Harvest Fest. Harvest Fest is an alternative to Halloween. The event is from 4:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Community Counseling Services gymnasium.

County most wanted man arrested

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department (CCSD) nabbed one of its most wanted offenders Oct. 22.
Long after being indicted in April 2012, West Point resident Quinshon Rice, 24, was recently arrested by the West Point Police Department following a routine response to a call regarding a possible disturbance of the peace. With two felony capias warrants from the CCSD along with a bench warrant from the Municipal Court to his name for alleged possession of cocaine and sale of marijuana, Rice was only able to elude law enforcement for so long.
