Cox, Keys Make Mississippi All-Star Roster

Late Wednesday afternoon, the roster for Mississippi’s All-Star football team was released for the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game that will be played December 11 in Mobile. West Point Green Wave players Tommy Keys and Justin Cox made the team’s roster. West Point head coach Chris Chambless will also be an assistant coach for Mississippi. A full story will appear in tomorrow’s paper.

Peewee football begins

The West Point Parks and Recreation Department kicked off its Peewee Football season on Tuesday night. Despite cloudy skies and a strong chance of rain, the bad weather held off for the four teams that went head-to-head.
“The rain held out,” said Parks assistant director Jarrod McDaniel. “It was a little damp, but it just settled the dust down.”
At 5:45, Sherman Berry’s team took the field against Leon Kelley’s crew. Berry’s team defeated their opponent 26-0.
An hour later, Will Ketchum’s team defeated Tim White’s bunch 20-6.

Tillman’s Students Excel at Tournament

Karate students from Tillman’s Karate School display the trophies they won at last Saturday’s Karate Tournament at the Bryan Union Hall. In front, from left are Collins Trolio (fourth in fighting, 6 years old),. Cohen Trolio (third in fighting, 8 years old) and Jack Ketchum (third in fighting, 5 years old). Standing are Tre Calvert (first in fighting, third in forms, 8 years old), Michal Gibson (fourth in fighting, 10 years old), Xavier Dobbs (third in forms, 8 years old) and Chris Gibson (third in weapons, third in fighting, 12 years old).

Louise Blansett Hirter

Louise Blansett Hirter, age 79, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2010, at Dugan Memorial Home in West Point.
Mrs. Hirter was born Jan. 11, 1931, in Clay County to the late Sallie Liza Russell and Ollie M. Blansett.
She worked as a waitress and later as an Avon Saleslady. She was a member of West End Baptist Church. Louise Blansett Hirter married Floyd Andrew Hirter on Mar. 6, 1970, he preceded her in death Dec. 29, 1998.

Seniors to play final game at Raider Field against Marshall

Last Friday night, The Raiders of Oak Hill Academy (3-6; 1-1) put on the best defensive show of the year for the home crowd in a 14-12 win over Kirk Academy. This week, they will face a tough Marshall Academy (6-2) team that will be Oak Hill’s final home game of the season.
That means that Friday night’s game will be senior night. A pre-game ceremony will honor Doss Miller and Jordan Hawkins, the two seniors on Oak Hill’s 2010 roster.

Green Wave take 4-0 district record into Saltillo match

The last two 5A Region 1 matches for the Green Wave of West Point High School (7-1; 4-0) have been close. A 22-20 win over Oxford two weeks ago was followed up with Friday night’s 28-27 win over Lake Cormorant, on the road.
This Friday night, the Green Wave will return home to take on the Tigers of Saltillo (3-5; 0-4). The Tigers are still looking for their first district win of the 2010 season.

Eagles to face 1-8 Calhoun at home

There is little doubt that the Hebron Christian Eagles (1-7; 0-2) played their best game all year on Friday night. Still, a 22-14 lead in the middle of the fourth was not enough get them past the Rams of Immanuel.
That game, in particular, was also the most important of the season for the Eagles. It was their chance to get back in the district race, after falling to Central Holmes two weeks before in their first district match.

Weather forecast good for Friday’s three home games

Rain showers in the early part of this week are forecasted to give way to great weather, as week 10 of the 2010 football season is set to bet underway this Friday night.
With the rain clearing in the first part of Wednesday, weather forecasters are predicting mostly clear skies for the Friday night games.
West Point, Oak Hill and Hebron will all be at home to play, with the Green Wave and Eagles celebrating homecoming during the contests.

Benton Lamar Moore

Benton Lamar Moore, age 75, passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, at West Point Community Living Center.
Benton Lamar Moore was born in Sparta, Nov. 11, 1934, to the late George and Ruth Hollingsworth Moore. He was a veteran of the United States Army and lived in West Point for the last 25 years.
Funeral services are Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010, at 11 a.m. from Robinson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Sallee officiating. Burial will follow in Popular Springs Cemetery in Vardaman.
Visitation is Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010, from 5 – 8 p.m. at Robinson Funeral Home.

Kent Gordon Hunt

Kent Gordon Hunt, age 52, passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, at his home in Starkville.
He was a member of First Baptist Church where he was saved and baptized at the age of 10. He was the owner of Hunt's Jewelry and an avid sportsman. Mr. Hunt coached SBA Little League Baseball for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Hunt; two sons: Gordon Hunt and Garrett Hunt; his parents: Jerry and Audie Hunt; one brother, Mark Hunt (Rene); and their son, Davis Hunt; all of Starkville, and numerous nieces and nephews.
