Oak Hill Academy is still searching for their first win on the year.
But as the weeks continue, the opponents won’t get any easier, including Canton Academy.
The 2-3 Panthers have had an inconsistent season. After starting 0-2, they got their first victory over Hillcrest and went toe-to-toe with Winston Academy, arguably the toughest team in the district.
“They gave Winston a run for their money,” Raiders head coach Benjie Merchant said. “Athlete wise they’re like Manchester and they play hard.”
Hebron Christian’s hopes of a district softball title evaporated Tuesday night as Winona Christian scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to earn a 5-3 victory on the road and take first place into the playoffs which start this weekend.
The Lady Eagles (12-7), who already secured their fifth consecutive playoff appearance a week ago, came back from a 2-0 deficit after giving up a pair of runs in the first inning to tie the game and eventually take the lead.
“We just got out played,” Hebron head coach Cass Tapley said.
The West Point High School swimming team had another good meet in the pool last Saturday, this time in Oxford including three top-ten finishes in their second meet of the season.
In all, 16 schools were represented from around the state.
“Overall, the majority of our swimmers had a faster time this meet than they did their very first meet two weeks ago,” head coach Stephen Stockton said. “I am very proud of each one of them. They have been working very hard, in-spite of the weather the past couple of weeks.”

On the heels of the team’s first victory in 2011, West Point (1-2) will have another tough hurdle when they hit the road for the second time this season at Noxubee County.
Last week, the Green Wave used a dominating second half effort from its defense and a balanced attack on offense to earn a 33-12 win over visiting Starkville who handed them their only loss a year ago.
As many as six players will be out for Oak Hill in tonight’s non conference slate versus Winona Christian. It’s been an issue for the read and white since fall camp.
Head coach Benjie Merchant and his staff have been forced to reshuffle positions all year long.
“It’s killing us,” he said. “We get one back, we lose anther one.”
Third string quarterback Adam Tumey, a new addition to the squad will be taking the snaps. Last season he played cornerback.
“He’s got a good arm and good throwing motion, just lack of experience at the position,” Merchant said.
With Hebron Christian School on the verge of a district title, Tuesday’s 12-1 victory over Calhoun Academy clinched a fifth consecutive playoff appearance for the Lady Eagles.
A landmark in itself, but for pitcher Chloe Tapley, it solidified her as one of the best pitchers in the MAIS.
Tapley again had another stellar outing in the circle, just three hits given up to compliment 13 strikeouts.
Nothing new for the junior, who over the last few weeks had pitched three straight no-hitters.
