It was a long ride home for the thousands of Mississippi State fans who believed prior to the 7:30 start of Saturday’s ballgame that the Bulldogs would be 8-0 and ranked in the top five in the nation after beating No. 1 Alabama.
It did not work out that way, but all was not a loss for state fans.
At the high school level, north Mississippi boasts teams like West Point, Noxubee County, Starkville and Oxford.
At the junior college level, this area of the state has East Mississippi Community College, which is ranked in the top five in the nation.
Go to the next level and Ole Miss and Mississippi State are the premier college programs in Mississippi in 2012.

The LINK will unveil the Prairie Belt Powersite on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at the Civic at 5:30 p.m. Along with the site comes a video a little over two minutes long about our site. Take a look at the 30 second teaser by following the link below.
First thing’s first.
The Oak Hill Academy Raiders (6-5; 2-3) had to defeat Immanuel Christian (3-7; 0-5) on Friday night to even have a shot at a playoff berth.
Mark that one off the checklist. The Raiders slid by Immanuel 20-19 on a cold, windy and slightly rainy Friday night.
Next order of business was to keep an eye on the scoreboard from around the state because a wild card berth would have to come at the hands of Winston Academy and Manchester Academy loses to Leake and Canton respectively.
It had to happen exactly how it happened.
Oak Hill Academy (6-5; 2-3) took care of business against Immanuel Christian 20-19.
Leake and Canton both won their games, and that not only secures a winning season for Oak Hill for the first time since 2006, but it puts them in the playoffs for the first time since 2009.
Congratulations to Coach Daniel Merchant, the players and the Oak Hill family. This is a truly great accomplishment.

The West Point Green Wave (8-2; 6-0) defeated the Oxford Chargers (9-1; 5-1) on Friday night to capture the District Championship.
Oxford and West Point exchanged blows early with touchdowns, but the Green Wave pulled away with 35 points in the first half. The final was 35-21.
More on this game tomorrow on the website and extended coverage will appear in Sunday's paper.
Tons of molten metal poured from the ladles inside the Severstal Columbus steel plant on Monday. The liquid that was seen pouring from the giant containers would just two hours later become about eight rolls of metal sheets that will be shipped to firms all around the country.
County and city leaders were treated to seeing the day-to-day process of making steel, but more importantly, they were treated to seeing what a large and operational industrial site looks like.
WEST POINT, – The LINK is unveiling the region’s newest megasite, the Prairie Belt Powersite. The event will be held Tuesday, October 30, at 5:30 pm at The Civic, 130 6th Street, West Point. This event is open to the public, and everyone is encouraged to attend to support West Point-Clay County’s economic development efforts.
Located in West Point, Mississippi, the Powersite is south of Hazelwood road, approximately three miles east of U.S. Highway 45 Alternate. This site is the first master planned, industrial megasite in Clay County.
Sometimes a team has to face the very best early on in order to be ready for greater challenges down the road.
This could be said for the 2012 West Point Green Wave (7-2; 5-0) who will face perhaps their toughest challenge on Friday night when the undefeated Oxford Chargers (9-0; 5-0) come into town.
It’s not certain if the Chargers will be the best team West Point has faced this year, but Oxford comes to town a district challenger, with the district on the line.
Neither team has lost a district game to date.
