Jessie Mae Hardy

Jessie Mae Hardy, age 84, passed away, Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point. Jessie Mae Hardy was born Dec. 11, 1926, in Carrollton, Pickens County Ala., to the late Jeddie Cook Wilson and Troy Wilson. She was a seamstress working in manufacturing and later did alterations for B & S Laundry She was of the Baptist faith. Jessie Mae Hardy was married to John Edwin Hardy, who preceded her in death Oct. 24, 1990.

Refuge Student Ministries hosts football camp

Area youth this weekend will have the opportunity to learn basic football skills in a Christian like setting.

The Refuge Student Ministries will be hosting a 'Football Camp for Christ' Saturday Oct 8, at the Jesse E. Harmon Sports Complex.

West Point faces an untested Hernando at home

West Point returns home tonight looking to improve on their tremendous start to their district schedule after dominating Lake Cormorant 42-14.

Tonight they take on a truly untested Hernando that have lost two in a row since their lone victory on the season in week three.

The Green Wave jumped off the bus from a two-plus hour ride up north and built up a 42-0 lead over the Gators early before the defense finally broke down in the fourth quarter.

Hebron battles reigning 8-man champs

Just days after coming up short on their biggest fight of the season, Hebron quickly erased the 52-50 double overtime loss to Park Place and put their focus on the reigning 8-man football champions in Kemper Academy.
“I think it’s a good it stings a little bit,” head coach Tri Nason said. “They know how it feels now and they don’t want it to happen again.
Last week the Crusaders overcame a 22-6 half time deficit to send the game into overtime and eventually prevail after stopping Will Corben-Rogers diving effort on a two-point conversion.

Raiders take on district newcomers

Oak Hill Academy is still searching for their first win on the year and as the season rolls along the teams don’t get any easier.
Tonight, the Raiders get back into district action when they take on Leake Academy after a two game road trip that saw them get shutout 40-0 in both games.
Leake has had a decent season thus far, scattering two wins among four losses over a six game span. Those wins came against Immanuel and Kirk.
Head coach Benjie Merchant said all the teams they’ve played so far have improved across the board from last season, mostly with new additions.

WP junior high students learn to be leaders

School was out at Fifth Street Middle School, but there were a handful of students sitting in a classroom Wednesday afternoon learning another lesson.

They weren’t in detention, but these girls, the West Point junior high cheerleaders, were meeting like they have been doing all semester and more importantly becoming better people in school and the community.

Dorothy Anderson Myers , age 97, passed away Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, at West Point Community Living Center. Dorothy Anderson Myers was born Oct. 21, 1913, in Kentucky, to the late Shelton George and Bessie Terrill Anderson. She was a member of First Christian Church and she helped her sister-in-law, Catherine Anderson, raise two nieces: Sandra Anderson McLemore and Barbara Anderson Mitchell, and a nephew, Bob Anderson.

Cox adjusting well at Scooba

SCOOBA - Justin Cox is having a lot of fun playing college football.

The former West Point quarterback that guided the Green Wave to back-to-back Class 5A state titles in 2009 and 2010, has gotten off to a good start to his collegiate career in the secondary for East Mississippi Community College.

“It’s pretty fun, making plays and all,” he said. “I just can’t wait to play again.”

Deborah Joyce Casey

Deborah Joyce Casey, age 62, passed away Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle.
Deborah Joyce Casey was born Aug. 5, 1949, in Vardaman, to the late Henry Wayne and Opal Griffin Casey. She was a retired retail operations manager for Mossy Oak, and a member of Christ United Methodist Church. She had a great love for animals.
Graveside services are Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Sarah Windham officiating.
