The Growth Alliance conference room was packed on Thursday night with a diverse group of West Point/Clay County citizens, bouncing ideas off of one another’s heads in an attempt to bring the community together.
This is not the first time Unity in the Community has met. The group has been meeting for almost a year, but Thursday night’s crowd was the largest in the organization’s short history.
The goal is simple. Unify the community.
Mississippi State University and Blair E. Batson Children Hospital have partnered together to raise money and awareness for the only children’s hospital in the state of Mississippi.
Spearheaded by the Mississippi State Student Association and Co-Director of Late Night Events Brett Harris, the “On Your Mark, Get Set, GLOW 5k Run” is set for February 7 and will start at 7 o’clock at night on Mississippi State’s Starkville campus. The run will feature local Golden Triangle Area disc jockeys positioned along the three-mile route and has already created an enormous buzz around campus.
Thursday and Friday night were the final regular season games for head coach William Cotton and his Hebron Christian Lady Eagles in Pheba as they closed out MAIS district 3-A play before the district tournament.
Thursday was a must win game for the Lady Eagles hosting Calhoun Academy as Hebron sat with a 2-4 district record after a narrow 42-41 victory over Kemper Academy Tuesday. In another tightly contested match-up, the Lady Eagles used a gutsy third quarter to pull away from the Lady Cougars picking up the needed win 48-41.
The West Point Green Wave returned to district 2 5-A action Friday night playing host to the Oxford Chargers. Both teams entered the night with 1-1 records and hoped to pick up their second win in district play.
The night started out well for Oxford as the Chargers took an early 12-2 lead over the Wave after three minutes of play in the first quarter. West Point though cranked up and tore through Oxford with a 19-6 run closing out the quarter ahead 21-19. After taking the lead late in the first, the Wave never relinquished their hold on the game going on to win 81-67.
Right now, we as a nation are 16 trillion dollars in debt, the current administration has not submitted a budget since it took over in 2010, there is no job creation, gas is over $3 a gallon and continuing to rise and everyone’s taxes just went up to support a presidential mandate that nobody wanted. The main thing that seems to be bothering the media is....Beyonce was lip syncing when she sang at the inauguration. Really people? Really?
When Wayne and Loretta Vice said goodbye to their friends of 41 years Sherree and Carl Harris after a New Year’s visit in 2011, they had no idea it was the last time they would see Carl alive.
On January 26, 2011, the dedicated husband and Air Force veteran suffered a massive heart attack and died.
It was sudden, and the pain is still with all of the friends and family he left behind.
“I still miss him today,” Wayne Vice said in a phone interview from Louisiana on Friday. “My kids still miss him. They probably loved him as much as we did. He’s still here in our minds.”
If your driver’s license is close to expiring, or you’re planning to get one for the first time, you’re going to have to get it somewhere besides West Point.
The office located by the 4-H Extension Service and the county jail has been closed until further notice.
Warren Strain, spokesperson for the Mississippi Highway Patrol said on Friday that “computer infrastructure” problems were the cause of the sudden closure.
“It has to do with computer wiring,” Strain said. “We have to temporarily close the station until it is replaced.”
Archie Anderson “Arch’ Murray never got the chance to enter the race for West Point mayor like he wanted to in 1968.
He passed away on May 25 of that year, but his legacy of commitment to his employees at Babcock and Wilcox Company and to the the West Point/Clay County community make Murray a strong nominee for the West Point Hall of Fame.
Murray will join the HOF posthumously on Thursday night, along with Kyle Chandler III, who remains a vital part of this community.
So they’ve given their opening arguments, put witnesses on the stand, entered photos and materials into evidence and examined each and every person called to testify. But sometimes prosecuting attorneys and defense attorneys need one last chance to convince the 12-member jury the defendant is guilty or not guilty of committing a crime.
That’s where closing arguments come in.
Not many would argue that West Point is not one of the most artistically rich communities in north Mississippi.
It is not just the citizenry’s love for art that drives events like the Prairie Arts Festival each fall. It’s the literal raw talent that so many in the community possess and express.
The unique blend of paintings, drawings, potteries, films, music etc. drive the love of art in this town.
It has also driven the West Point/Clay County Arts Council to start the first “Art Walk” in West Point.
