Local men’s group to address community needs at Saturday meeting

The Town Creek Square Apartment complex has been a thorn in the side of West Point law enforcement for some time.
In early August, West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley called upon management at the complex to get unruly tenants and their guests under control.
While many of the immediate problems have been addressed, the systemic problems, which affect the youth of the community, still persist.

Collins charged by CCSD with third offense DUI

Jerome Collins is no stranger to Clay County courtrooms.
Already tagged with an arrest warrant for a hefty unpaid fine for past offenses involving the operation of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, Collins added to the wrap sheet this weekend.
Collins is now charged with Driving Under the Influence, Third Offense.
He has also been charged with resisting arrest, failure to yield to blue light and siren, and he has been charged based on a failure to pay warrant that amounted to $1,048 owed to Justice Court.

Supervisors to appoint new county Volunteer Fire Coordinator

The Clay County Board of Supervisors convened on Monday morning, which was the first meeting of 2013 for the board.
As with any first of the year meetings involving the county board, much of the meeting was consumed with the business of re-hiring and appointing county employees for 2013.
The board itself voted for its 2013 president and vice president. District 4 Supervisor Shelton Deanes will fill the position as board President, and District 5 Supervisor Floyd McKee will serve as the board’s Vice President this year.

Brown takes oath of office

Bryan adds e-book technology at library

With the new year, changes have come at the Bryan Public Library. A new web page brings E-books to make borrowing from the library as simple as connecting to the web site.
All you need is a Kindle, Nook, tablet or smartphone and the world of reading is at your fingertips. The latest technology allows for hundreds or even thousands of books to be carried easily in a Kindle, Nook or tablet. The e-readers are a dream come true for people who love to read and the Bryan Public Library is making it simple to borrow reading material without a fee.

Sue White Stafford

Sue White Stafford, 78, passed away on Friday, January 4, 2013 at the Carrington Nursing Center in Starkville.
Lillie Sue Boyce Stafford was born August 28, 1934 in Chickasaw County to the late Nancy Bell Huffman and James Rupert Boyce.
Mrs. Stafford worked in the cafeteria at the Clay County Schools for 20 years and was a member of Pheba Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by husbands Charles D. White, William Howard Brand and Bennie E. Stafford.

Ezell Watson

Ezell Watson, age 58, passed away Wednesday. January 2, 2013, at the Red Bay Hospital in Red Bay, Alabama.
Funeral Services are Monday, January 7, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Third Mt. Olive M.B. Church. Burial will follow in the Gospel Temple Cemetery.
Visitation is today, Sunday, January 6, 2013, from 2 - 4 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home.
Carter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Jean Kerr

Dorothy Jean Kerr age 87, died Friday, January 4, 2013, at her home in West Point.
She was born March 6, 1925, in Jonesboro, Ark,, to the late Lottie Beatrice Johnston Kerr and John Brice Kerr.
Dorothy Jean Kerr was preceded in death by her siblings, Martha Eileen Addkison, Julia Elizabeth Kerr, and John Brice Kerr.
She is survived by her sister, Frances Kerr Botsford of Benton, Ark., seven nieces and nephews and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Safety first at elementary schools

January 6, 2013

Construction is going well at both Church Hill and South Side Elementary Schools. New safety precautions are being implemented to assure the identity of visitors before having access to classrooms or children. New entrances are being built so that anyone entering the building will have to come through the office and present identification. Intercoms are posted outside the doors and the public will have to be buzzed in to gain access to the schools.
