Mercier, Murphy Engagement
Robert and Tina Mercier of West Point, Miss., are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Jessica Mercier to Justin Murphy, son of Bricy Weaver of Tupelo, Miss., and Patrick Murphy of Kosciusko, Miss.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Marcilene and Jimmy Stevenson of West Point, Miss., and the late Bobbie Jean Redus, and Robert H. Mercier, Sr.
She is a 2006 graduate of Oak Hill Academy and will receive a Bachelor’s degree from Mississippi University for Women in May.
Harris, Grayer Engagement
Willie Floyd and Katherine Harris of West Point, Miss., are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Ronica Harris to Jermarkco Grayer, son of Lillie Grayer of Columbus, Miss., and Jimmy Lee Saulsberry of Starkville, Miss.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mrs. Lephila Harris of West Point, Miss., and the late Mr. Freddie Louis Harris and the late Mr. and Mrs. Lee Rambus.
Adrienne Hood Steadman
Adrienne Hood Steadman, age 79, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle in Columbus, Miss.
Community Commons, a new Community Counseling Services retail plaza on Highway 45 in West Point, is opening soon and will feature four retail establishments for the people of West Point, Clay County and surrounding areas to enjoy.
Workers have been putting the finishing touches on the building, affixing signs created by local artist Claire Houston to each shop, moving merchandise and fixtures into the building and getting the facility ready for business.
When it comes to electing officials to fill the posts of city and county offices, an overwhelming number of voters in West Point and Clay County almost always cast their vote for democratic candidates.
For years, the democratic party has won the support of Clay County not only in city and county races but state races as well. Because of the knowledge that the majority of Clay County is democrat, republicans haven’t run for office in Clay County in decades. Until now.
April 21st
Crashes of thunder and lightening mixed with heavy rain and high winds left damage all across West Point and Clay County Wednesday night after one of this season's more severe thunderstorms made its way across the area.
More than 30 trees fell either across city and county roads, on top of homes or near homes, and Conley Cox Road and Decker Road received flash flooding. One home on Cedar Bluff Loop was damaged, an apartment complex on Travis Street suffered damage and two homes on Westbrook Street have damage from a huge tree that uprooted in one of the yards.
April 20th
Carnell Green
Carnell Green, age 56, passed away Friday, April 15, 2011, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Miss.
Funeral services are Thursday, April 21, 2011, at 1 p.m. from Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel, with the Rev. Willie Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Poole's Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is today, from 4 – 7 p.m. at Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.
James Clayton Pruett
James Clayton Pruett, age 89, passed away Monday, April 18, 2011, at Regency Hospital in Meridian, Miss.
He was born July 24, 1941, in West Point, Miss., to the late Clovis M. Pruett, Sr. and Lola Rook.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Catherine Pope Farmer
Catherine Pope Farmer, age 89, passed away, Saturday, April 16, 2011, at the Waverly Care Home in West Point.
Mrs. Farmer was born Sept. 21, 1921, in Pheba to the late Ethel Ellen Duke and Walter Brooks Pope. She was a switch board operator for Ivy Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1984 and was a member of First Baptist Church.
Catherine Pope Farmer married William Herbert Farmer February 2, 1942, in Biloxi and he preceded her in death on May 27, 2009.
