OHA tennis players state bound

The Oak Hill Netters played in north state Wednesday afternoon and finished strong, with the girls earning second in the north and the boys third.
In the first round of north state, John Willis Stevens of Oak Hill defeated Davis Roberts from Kirk Academy (6-1)(6-0) in No. 1 singles. Sara Dill and Margaret Hay defeated Dilley and Mathews from Lee Academy (6-1)(3-6) (7-6) in a third set tiebreaker to advance in No. 1 girls doubles.

James A. Wofford

James A. Wofford, age 68, passed away Monday, April 28, 2014, at North Mississippi Medical Center of Tupelo.
Funeral services are Sunday, May 4, 2014, at 2 p.m. from New Hope M.B. Church of Woodland, with Rev. Leroy Bragg officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Woodland Cemetery.

Vehicle drops on West Point man

A West Point man was seriously injured Thursday after a vehicle fell on him as he was working.
Emergency personnel were dispatched about 1:30 p.m. Thursday to a residence at 1015 E. Brame Avenue in West Point in response to a possible vehicle falling.
West Point Fire Department Battalion Chief Ken Wilbourne said firefighters arrived to discover a resident, whose name has not been released, trapped beneath a vehicle under which he’d been working. Wilbourne said the car had been sitting on a jack when the jack collapsed.

Supply drives continue to emerge in wake of storm

In the wake of the Monday’s severe storms that rocked Northeast Mississippi, agencies in Clay County are taking donations to assist the neighboring communities that were hit hard by the weather.
Students at West Point High School began accepting donations Thursday and will continue to do so on Friday.
Shaffany Hamilton, who teaches 11th-12-grade social studies at WPHS, said the students are gathering non-perishable items, such as canned goods and bottled water, to take wherever it needs to go.

Community observes National Day of Prayer

In honor of National Day of Prayer, local church groups gathered Thursday to march down Commerce Street and hold a prayer service in Sally Kate Winters Park.
According to nationaldayofprayer.org, the National Day of Prayer began in 1952 and is held every year on the first Thursday of May.
The local prayer service involved various residents from churches in the community, as well as city and county officials praying for areas such as federal and local government.

Beatrice Brown White

Beatrice Brown White, age 78, passed away Monday, April 28, 2014, at Darlington Oaks in Verona.
She was born June 4, 1945, in Pheba. She worked in childcare and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
A graveside service was 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Hebron Cemetery with Rev. Mike Smith officiating.
Pallbearers were Mike Murray, Josh Hazlewood, Robbie Brown, Allen Brown, and Tyler Brown.
Honorary pallbearers were NMMC – Hospice staff, Darlington Oaks staff and her caregiver Sinthia Cherry.

AG warns of post-disaster scams

Attorney General Jim Hood reminds recent storm victims of the dangers that come from crooked contractors following disasters and storm damage like the State has recently seen.
Following the cycles of recent storms, the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office (MSAGO) and the Mississippi State Board of Contractors (MSBOC) are joining forces to send a message to crooked contractors that bad business will not be tolerated in the Magnolia State and violators will be prosecuted.
