Eagles seek redemption

PHEBA — The Hebron Christian Eagles are looking for district redemption.
After dropping the first match-up against the Kemper Rams Dec. 9 in DeKalb, Hebron gets another shot at them in Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) district play at 7:30 p.m. today at Hebron Christian School in Pheba. The Hebron Lady Eagles (9-3), who are undefeated in all five district games and ranked No. 4 in this week’s Clarion-Ledger MAIS Class-A rankings, open the varsity slate against the Kemper Lady Rams at 6 p.m.

Henry Dean, age 61, passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015, at his residence in Jackson.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. Sunday, January 18, 2015, from Hopewell M.B. Church, Cedar Bluff with Bishop Robert Fortson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 2 – 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, at Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Sybil Kennedy Bray

Sybil Kennedy Bray, age 91, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, at North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice Unit in Tupelo.
She was born Jan. 30, 1923, in Smithville to Charley Jackson Kennedy and Minnie Jane Ford Kennedy. She was a homemaker, sewed for the public, and worked for the Christian book store. She was a member of Faith Bible Church.

Kate Rita Miller

Kate Rita Miller, age 78, passed away Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at North Mississippi Medical Center - West Point.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, from Johnson Creek M.B. Church, Pheba, with Dr. Bruce H. Guyton officiating. Burial will follow the church cemetery.
Visitation is 3 – 6 p.m. today, Friday, Jan. 16, 2015, at Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Ray DeLaughter

Thomas Ray DeLaughter, age 80, passed away Jan. 14, 2015, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle in Columbus.
Mr. Thomas was born Feb. 9, 1934, in Lincoln County, the son of the late Milton Ray and Clara Thornhill DeLaughter. He was a Baptist. He married Betty Jean Furr DeLaughter on Feb. 8, 1977, in Brookhaven and she passed away March 4, 2003.
Funeral services are Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, at 11 a.m. from Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with the Dr. James Towery officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Valley Cemetery in Mathiston.

WPPD looks for armed robbery info

West Point Police Department investigators are looking for more information on an alleged armed robbery from September, as well as a burglary and vandalism from earlier this month.
n About 11:50 p.m. Sept. 26, officers were dispatched to the Texaco service station on Highway 45 North in reference to an alleged armed robbery. According to the incident report, the store clerk said an individual wearing black pants, a black shirt, gray gloves and a red head garment entered the store and came around the counter holding a knife.

Local found not guilty in murder

After a near three-day trial, a jury found West Point native Nathanial Collins not guilty of murder during Thursday's Clay County Circuit Court session.
Collins, 38, of Clisby Road in West Point, was charged with the 2012 shooting death of Tracy L. Maxwell. After about two hours of deliberation, the jury returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty.
Collins' attorney, Mark Cliett, said there was no physical evidence linking Collins to the murder.

Tony 'Pop' Weed

Tony "Pop" Weed, age 62, passed away Jan.13, 2015, at Pioneer Community Hospital in Aberdeen.
Tony was born March 19, 1952, in West Point, the son of the late Andrew Melvin and Lucy Jeannette Boyce Weed. Tony loved attending worship services and singing. "Pop" as so many knew him, loved his family. He always had a smile on his face. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three brothers: Donald, James, and Charles Weed.
