West Point PD investigating new burglaries

Alleged burglaries have been keeping the West Point Police Department busy over the past month, and investigators ask all residents to keep their homes and vehicles secure.
WPPD Chief Investigator Albert Lee said the police are investigating an apparent burglary on Eshman Avenue. The victim arrived at their home April 22 in the 600 block of North Eshman, and reported signs of a break-in.

Supes to review hazard plan

The Clay County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing for the proposed hazard mitigation plan at 6 p.m. on May 22 during its next meeting.
West Point Fire Chief Johnny Littlefield said the county has to renew its hazard mitigation plan every five years to be eligible for the Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP).

Beatrice Thompson Doss Allison, age 81, passed away Friday, May 2, 2014.
Funeral services are Friday, May 9, 2014, at 11 a.m. from Pilgrim Grove M.B. Church with Rev. Robert Shamblin – Traylor officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation is today, Thursday, May 8, 2014, from 3 – 6 p.m. at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.

Local Habitat for Humanity set to host Women Build in conjunction with Lowe’s

Clay County Habitat for Humanity (CCHFH) in partnership with Lowe’s will sponsor the third “Women Build,” Friday. at Lone Oak. Lowe’s sponsors workshops to educate women to be part of the building process when they volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.

Local tornado victim supply drive successful

United Way of Clay County, Lyon Insurance Agency and East Mississippi Community College teamed up to host a donation drive for tornado victims in Louisville and Winston County from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday.
United Way coordinated the drive, with EMCC providing a truck and trailer. Lyon Insurance allowed the truck to park in front of its office and supplied workers to sort the donations.
Lyon Insurance Agency President Gil Lyon said the turnout from West Point and Clay County residents was phenomenal.

WPPD citing blue light users

The West Point Police Department is cracking down on cars using illegal blue lights on vehicles in the city.
Mississippi Code Section 63-7-20 prohibits any person, other than a law enforcement officer on duty, to use or display blue lights on a motor vehicle.
West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley is warning motorists not to put colored lights on their vehicles, especially blue lights, because WPPD is citing them.

Kenneth Tompkins Owens

Kenneth Tompkins Owens, age 22, passed away Friday, May 2, 2014.
He worked for the city of West Point and was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral services are today, May, 6, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Robinson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Terry Butler and Rev. Duran Palmertree officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Bluff Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery.
Pallbearers are David Jolly Joseph Tompkins, Anthony Barnhill, Terry Barnhill, James Counts Jr., Jason Barnhill, Josh Norton.
Honorary pallbearers are Robert Fair, Boyd O’Brian, Jeremy Harpole, Johnny O’Brian and ER staff of NMMC-West Point.
