House fire kills two in Clay County

Two adults were killed in a late night house fire in Clay County Thursday. About 11 p.m. volunteer fire departments responded to a structure fire on Dr. Sears Road, just north of West Point. Three adults and one child were reportedly in the home when the blaze began.
One adult and one child managed to escape to safety.

From his time as a player at Oak Hill Academy and Mississippi College to his stints on the sidelines with various high schools, West Point native Tommy Nester has always found time for Christ in his life.
Tuesday night, the Indianola Academy head coach received the Bill Buckner Influence Award from the Mississippi Fellowship of Christian Athletes at the MAIS Coaching Clinic in Jackson.

Joe Alvin Williams

Joe Alvin Williams, age 69, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Poplar Springs M.B. Church of Eupora, with Rev. Nathaniel Holmes officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 3 – 6 p.m. today, Friday, July 18, 2014, at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Randy Hodges

Randy Hodges, age 61, passed away Monday, July 20, 2014, at his home.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2014, at the J.F. Carter Memorial Chapel at Carter Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Hodges Cemetery at Fountain Head M.B. Church.
Visitation is 4 – 6 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2014, at the J.F. Carter Memorial Chapel.
Carter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Local housing authority hosts second ‘stomp out bullying’ campaign

The West Point Housing Authority (WPHA) sponsored a “Stomp Out Bullying” campaign with Safe Haven of Columbus Thursday at the WPHA building and community center in West Point. This was the second event of its kind with the WPHA and Safe Haven. Parents and children were invited to come and hear strategies for dealing with bullies.

West Point man pleads guilty to armed robbery

Thursday’s Clay County Circuit Court session saw sentencing for three cases on the docket: Deshawn Rambus, Roger Shelton and Joshua Earnest.
Rambus, 23, of West Point, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a stolen firearm, as well as possession of amphetamine. According to court documents, Rambus was arrested in April 2013 for possession of a .9 mm Beretta handgun which belonged to B & M Trading and Pawn in Aberdeen, and a .380 Smith and Wesson handgun belonging to a West Point resident.

Police investigate shooting

Wednesday night saw the fourth alleged shooting of the summer at Town Creek Apartments on West Half Mile Road in West Point.
Just before 7 p.m. Wednesday, WPPD officers were dispatched to the apartment complex in reference to shots allegedly being fired, according to the incident report. When officers arrived they were informed by residents that the incident took place in the middle of the complex between two of the apartment buildings.

Merchant reflects on opportunity

Daniel Merchant could be considered a football program architect.
His first football assistant coaching job helped revitalize Immanuel Christian School’s football team from 2010-12. Starting in the spring of 2012, Merchant was the epicenter of a gridiron renaissance with his first career head coaching position at Oak Hill Academy.
