FUMC youth collecting for storm victims

West Point residents are continuing to offer their support to Louisville tornado victims.
Members of the First United Methodist Church youth group are collecting bottled water for Louisville residents through Saturday. FUMC office manager Julie Gray said the youth group will accept cases, jugs or gallons of bottled water through Friday at the Bryan Youth Center of the church at 306 Westbrook St. in West Point. The initiative will culminate with a mass collection day from 9-11 a.m. Saturday in the Sunflower parking lot on Main Street.

EMCC preps local workers for Yokohama

East Mississippi Community College is running day and night classes to prepare residents in the region to work at the new Yokohama Tire plant.
Yokohama is going to need 500 employees for the new tire plant, for which the state is responsible to provide as per a memorandum of understanding with the company. Should that agreement not be honored, the state will be held to an undisclosed monetary penalty.
Mississippi has charged EMCC to administer all the plant's pre-employment training.

LINK to unveil region study

Clayton Dale Koehn

May 9, 2014

Clayton Dale Koehn, age 82, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at his residence.
He was born July 20, 1931, in Kansas to the late Jonas and Laura Koehn. He was baptized into the Church of God In Christ, Mennonite Nov. 19, 1944. He married Phyllis Becker on October 26, 1952. He was a farmer for many years in Burns, Kan., before moving to West Point in 1979. He enjoyed his work and continued this occupation until his death.

Malinda Conaway

Malinda Conaway, age 90, passed away Friday, May 2, 2014.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10. 2014, from Strong Hill M.B. Church with Rev. Israel Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Strong Hill Stockholder’s Cemetery.
Visitation is today, Friday, May 9, 2014, from 2 – 5 p.m. at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Powell works with foster children, families

The West Point Civitan Luncheon Club welcomed special guest Ardrana Powell, intensive outpatient therapist with Mississippi Children’s Home Services, to inform members about mental health services for foster children during the club’s meeting Wednesday at North Mississippi Medical Center Education Room in West Point.
“I deal with crisis,” Powell said. “Families who take in foster children usually know they have a rough road ahead. I’m called to evaluate the child and the home when problems arise.”

West Point PD investigating new burglaries

Alleged burglaries have been keeping the West Point Police Department busy over the past month, and investigators ask all residents to keep their homes and vehicles secure.
WPPD Chief Investigator Albert Lee said the police are investigating an apparent burglary on Eshman Avenue. The victim arrived at their home April 22 in the 600 block of North Eshman, and reported signs of a break-in.

Supes to review hazard plan

The Clay County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing for the proposed hazard mitigation plan at 6 p.m. on May 22 during its next meeting.
West Point Fire Chief Johnny Littlefield said the county has to renew its hazard mitigation plan every five years to be eligible for the Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP).

Beatrice Thompson Doss Allison, age 81, passed away Friday, May 2, 2014.
Funeral services are Friday, May 9, 2014, at 11 a.m. from Pilgrim Grove M.B. Church with Rev. Robert Shamblin – Traylor officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
