Mary Jane Smith, 82, passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.
Mrs. Mary Jane was born Jan. 15, 1932, in Mathiston the daughter of the late Joe Fred and Jewel Bennett Doss. She was a homemaker and member of First Christian Church, where she was a member of the Mary Martha Sunday School Class. She was an avid bridge player, accomplished seamstress, and was dedicated to serving with Meals on Wheels. She married Edward Hester on April 23, 1950, in West Point. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Bobby Joe Doss.

Bernard M. Meisenhoelder

Bernard M. Meisenhoelder, 86, passed away Saturday. Feb. 1, 2014, at Dugan Memorial Home in West Point.
Mr. Bernard was born May 4, 1927, in Kenosa, Wisconsin, the son of the late Rudolf George and Margaretha Barkemeyer Meisenhoelder. He retired from Goodwill, having worked as a maintenance employee for 18 years. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Columbus. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two others Harold and Carl Meisnehoelder.

Marian E. Bramlett, age 82 of West Point, passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at West Point Community Living Center.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later date.
Calvert Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Williams, Jenkins featured in Black History Month art exhibit at Bryan Public Library

The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. sponsored Diane Williams and Jerry Jenkins to display their artwork at the Bryan Public Library during Black History Month. Williams is an author and artist working in mixed media fabric art. Jenkins is a member of the Hasan Drums Group, a member of the Mississippi Arts Commission and a teacher of the performing arts.

GTR Authority awarded $90,000 waste tire grant

The Golden Triangle Solid Waste Management Authority’s (SWMA) coffer got a little heavier after having recently been awarded a $90,000 Waste Tire grant on behalf of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ).
Applications for the Waste Tire grant (herein referred to simply as “the grant”) are open year long, according to MDEQ Communications Director Robbie Wilbur.

MCA honors Clay County man

John Elliott has been a fixture in the beef cattle industry for 40 years, and on Saturday his longtime efforts were recognized. Elliott earned the Mississippi Cattlemen’s Association 2014 award for Commercial Cattleman of the Year at the MCA annual conference in Jackson.

Skills classes take off at EMCC

The Clay County Board of Supervisors were updated on the progress of the Yokohoma Tire Manufacturing Plant workforce classes, which kicked into gear the moment East Mississippi Community College resumed classes for the spring semester.
Mitzi Thompson, EMCC workforce specialist, said community participation thus far indicated a positive forecast for the interest in employment at Yokohama once the business begins its application phase.

Sarah Dill scored 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds, helping the Oak Hill Lady Raiders defeat the Marshall Lady Raiders, 51-31, in a MAIS non-district game Friday night at Oak Hill Academy in West Point.
“We shot pretty good and held their best player scoreless,” Oak Hill Head Coach Stan Hughey said. “We ran some different offensive sets and had a good night in general. The seniors played well.”
