Supervisors vote down drug court

The Clay County Board of Supervisors voted not to financially support the county’s misdemeanor drug court at its meeting Thursday. The board originally voted to cut funding for the drug court in June due to lack of available funds.

Navistar awarded $38.4 million US Army contract

Navistar Defense announced Thursday that its plant in West Point received a $38.4 million contract to upgrade vehicles for the U.S. Army. Under the contract, Navistar Defense will reset and standardize International MaxxPro Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (vehicles) in the Army’s fleet, according to Navistar Senior Manager of Communications Elissa Maurer.
“Work will include installing MaxxPro survivability upgrades, independent suspensions and numerous other upgrades on vehicles returning from theater,” Maurer said.

Ginger Carver, a Registered Nurse (RN) and a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) spoke to the West Point Civitan Luncheon Club at noon Wednesday in the Education Room of the North Mississippi Medical Center, about diabetes.

City to receive new storm shelter

West Point residents will have a new place to seek safety during inclement weather when the city receives its new community storm shelter. The city and county currently have no community storm shelter and many residents may not have a place to go during storms, according to Clay County Emergency Management Director Kerrie Gentry-Blissard.
Blissard said that while there's no time table for construction as of Wednesday, the city is in the final stages of receiving a Mississippi Emergency Management Agency Grant to build a shelter.

Mississippi outdoorsmen are gearing up for the state's first ever Second Amendment tax holiday this weekend, and local retailers are doing their part to be ready.

Wilburn McCarter, age 81, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014, at his home in West Point.
Funeral services are Friday, Sept.5, 2014, at 10 a.m. from Calvert Funeral Home Chapel in West Point with interment to follow is Pheba Cemetery . Visitation is Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, at Calvert Funeral Home from 5 – 8 p.m.
Complete arrangements will be announced later by Calvert Funeral Home.

Weather hampers PAF

The threat of inclement weather may have rained on festival goers' parade for the 36th annual Prairie Arts Festival Saturday, but crowds remained fair for the event.
Lisa Klutts, West Point Clay County Growth Alliance director and chief festival coordinator, said impending rain had proven a deterrent for several veteran vendors originally scheduled to participate in this year's event. Overall, Klutts said about 12 participants did not set up booths along the route.

Wrecks at minimum during holiday weekend

In addition to the Labor Day holiday, this past weekend also saw the Prairie Arts Festival, Howlin’ Wolf Memorial Blues Festival and Mississippi State University’s first home football game of the season. All those activities meant there was plenty of traffic coming in and out of West Point and Clay County.
Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said the weekend was busy for the sheriff’s department, but overall fairly quiet.
