United Way prepares to launch fall campaign

United Way of Clay County will host its "Day to Care" and campaign kickoff luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 23 at the Civic in West Point.
United Way of Clay County Executive Director Stacy Hays said the "Day to Care" begins at 8 a.m., and is a community event to help develop teamwork and build morale among volunteers while giving back to the community.

Wild hogs cause growing concern

Wild hogs are considered nuisance animals by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. MDWFP defines "wild hogs" as any feral hog, wild swine, Russian boar or any pig that is not domesticated or has a wild-looking appearance or behavior.
Clay County Mississippi State University (MSU) Extension Service Director B.J. McClenton said that wild hogs were becoming more of a problem in the county.
McClenton said wild hogs cause a lot of damage to crops, as well as destroying yards and carrying diseases.

CCSD to receive DUI enforcement grant

The U.S. Department of Justice is working to make it easier for state and local law enforcement to crack down on those driving under the influence. The Clay County Sheriff's Department is tapping into that pool of resources.

John Guido, age 86, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014, at Care Center of Aberdeen.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2014, at Union Baptist M.B. Church in Prairie, with Rev. Mike Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 2 – 4 p.m. today, Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Hebron ready for postseason

PHEBA — Hebron Christian has waited two seasons to make another appearance in the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) postseason.
After a victory over Calhoun Academy on the road Sept. 9 in Calhoun City, 9-6, the Lady Eagles punched their tickets into the playoffs, and the wait was over.

WPPD to host drug drop

The West Point Police Department is will participate in a national prescription drug take-back event beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. The national drug take-back day is sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), and is a way for citizens to discard outdated or unwanted prescription medication.
According to a statement released to media, the DEA has hosted seven take-back days over the past four years and taken in 390 tons of pills.
West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley said WPPD took part in each take-back day the DEA hosted.
