VIDEO: Mississippi State Rises To No. 1 In AP Top 25

Mississippi State is the new No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll, replacing Florida State and making the fastest rise to the top spot in the history of the poll. The Bulldogs received 45 first-place votes from the media panel Sunday. Mississippi State beat Auburn 38-23 on Saturday, its third straight victory against a top-10 team. The Bulldogs are the first team in the poll's 78-year history to go from unranked to No. 1 in five weeks.

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Auburn's Nick Marshall had some good moments on Saturday afternoon.

His teammates D'haquille Williams and Jonathan Jones did as well.

But the Tigers couldn't pull themselves out of the mammoth hole their mistakes caused in the first few minutes of the game.

No. 3 Mississippi State beat No. 2 Auburn 38-23 on Saturday at Davis Wade Stadium.

The Bulldogs capitalized on a nightmarish start for the Tigers, which included two turnovers on their first two offensive plays.

Richard Glen McBrayer, 78, of West Point passed away Friday October 3, 2014 at NMMC-West Point. He was born April 25, 1936 in Kemper County to the late Escar Eugene and Nannie Eaves McBrayer. He worked for Southern Natural Gas for 37 years. He was a member and a Deacon of Calvary Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for 42 years. He was a Mason, Past Master of Lodge 159, Shriner at Hamasa Temple and owner of McBrayer Quick Lube and Captian D’s in West Point.

Local historian brings Shiloh to life

The Horseshoe Robertson Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR,) met Wednesday at the home of Regent Gaynell Duke in West Point. Special guest was Ben Rosenkrans, a Civil War historian, who spoke to the ladies about the Battle of Shiloh and gave a slide presentation.

Cattlemen host cookout

The Clay County Branch of the Mississippi Cattlemen’s Association will host a benefit cookout from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today at the Kroger parking lot in West Point.
Clay County Cattleman John Elliott said the MCA will offer ribeye steak dinners for $12 apiece, and steak sandwiches for $6. The cattlemen will also raffle two cuts of ribeye loin for $1 apiece.
“We’re doing this to raise money for agricultural scholarships for our 4-H members,” Elliot said. “We’ve been doing it for several years now and we always have a great turnout.”

County appoints 2 to LINK board

The Clay County Board of Supervisors appointed two residents to the Golden Triangle Development LINK oversight board at its meeting Thursday. The board, comprised of four members from each LINK county, meets once a month with LINK CEO Joe Max Higgins to keep the counties informed about economic development in the area.
West Point Mayor Robbie Robinson, who previously served on the board, said it’s responsible for setting and approving policy for the LINK.

Humphries tapped for all-star team

On Wednesday morning, West Point senior Chris Humphries was added to the Bernard Blackwell All-Star North Team roster at a Mississippi Association of Coaches (MAC) press conference in Clinton. The Blackwell All-Star football game features 80 of the top players in Mississippi, divided into North and South teams. The game is scheduled for noon kickoff Saturday, Dec. 20, in Gulfport.
