Virgie M. Gary passed away, Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014, at Signature Health Care in Roanoak Rapids, N.C.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, from Double Springs M.B. Church in Slate Springs. Burial will follow in Union Grove Cemetery in Calhoun City.
The body will lie in state from noon until service time.
Carter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Laundromat gets significant remodel under new owners

Residents looking for a spot to wash and dry their clothes have a new, or at least updated, option in the form of the West Point Laundromat.
Macon businessman Brad Guy purchased the former Coin-O-Matic laundromat on West Main Street about a month ago, and has been working to update and improve the facilities. He said he looked at opening a laundromat in West Point because he believed it would meet a need in the community.

Animal control issues improve

After the West Point Police Department took over animal control duties from Public Works at the beginning of July, the city hired Eric Davis as animal control officer. Since then, the West Point native has worked part time but was approved to become a full time officer by the board of selectmen Nov. 11.
West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley said Davis’ promotion was in anticipation of sending him to the law enforcement training academy in Pearl early next year.

CCS looks to offer System of Care

Community Counseling Services (CCS) looks to offer a new youth program in Clay County during the next year after receiving a $300,000 grant from the Mississippi Department of Mental Health.
CCS Clay County Administrator Stephanie Taylor said the grant will go toward setting up the Golden Triangle Area System of Care (SOC).
"The SOC is more of a non-traditional method of counseling," Taylor said. "It's about giving youth a voice and seeking their input on how they can do better."

Airport sewer expansion wrapping up

West Point began a $170,000 project to add the McCharen Field airport to the city's sewer system on Oct.1, and the project is nearing completion.
The project was funded by a 90 percent Federal Aviation Administration grant, 5 percent from the state, and 5 percent from the city, according to West Point Chief Administrative Officer Randy Jones.

Funeral Services are Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at 11 a.m. from Calvert Funeral Home Chapel in West Point with burial to follow in Pine Bluff Cemetery near Mantee.
Visitation is today, Friday, Nov, 14, 2014, from 5 - 8 p.m. at Calvert Funeral Home. Complete arrangements will be announced later by Calvert Funeral Home

Finas Mathews Sr., age 80, passed away Sunday, Nov. 9, 2014, in West Point.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, from Union Star M.B. Church, with Rev. Eric Ratliff officiating. Burial will follow in Union Star M.B. Church Cemetery.
Visitation is from 3 – 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, 2014, at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.
