Sarah Earline Roberts, age 70, of West Point, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced at a later date by Calvert Funeral Home.

Vidia Foster Moore

August 13, 2014

Vidia Foster Moore, age 66, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, at Windsor Place in Columbus.
She was born Nov. 1, 1947, in Houston, to the late Rosa Josephine Vance and William Denver Foster. She worked in the restaurant business as a waitress for many years.

Mary Ann Shelton Dean

Mary Ann Shelton Dean, age 90, passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday. Aug. 14, 2014, at Concord M.B. Church, with Rev. Kelly Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Concord M.B. Church Cemetery.
Visitation is 3 – 6 p.m. today, Wednesday. Aug. 13, 2014, at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Jasmine Chewe is an active, intelligent 17-year-old girl. Captain of the West Point High School cheerleading squad, member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Jr. ROTC, Upward Bound and Columbus Applebee's employee, Chewe wears many hats. Now, she can add world traveler to the list.

WPFD benefit rodeo begins this weekend

It’s rodeo time in the community as the West Point Fire Department and Lummus Rodeo Productions’ annual benefit rodeo kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Eagle Ranch on West TVA Road in West Point. Proceeds from the rodeo will go to benefit the Junior Auxiliary of West Point.
According to rodeo coordinator Luke Lummus, cowboys and cowgirls will come from all over the southeast to compete in the two-day rodeo.

Captain D’s set to open Monday

West Point residents looking for a place to eat will have a new option when Captain D’s opens its doors Monday. The restaurant, on Highway 45 South across from the Hampton Inn, will open at 10:30 a.m.
The restaurant has been a labor of love for the McBrayer family, of West Point, and Chris McBrayer said the idea to bring a Captain D’s restaurant to the city has floated around since 2008.

Howlin’ Wolf prep under way

The 19th annual Howlin' Wolf Memorial Blues Festival is just a few short weeks away, and festival workers have been working to prepare for the artists and the influx of visitors and blues enthusiasts to the community.
The festival is hosted by the Prairie Belt Blues Foundation, and doors will open 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Mary Holmes College auditorium in West Point. The first act will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

School board qualification period begins

The qualification period to run for one of two elected positions in the West Point Consolidated School District began Wednesday and runs through Sept. 5.
Mississippi passed legislation in September to consolidate the West Point and Clay County School districts into the new West Point Consolidated School District, set to take effect next year.

Hebron football concludes preseason camp

PHEBA — While classmates were enjoying their final days of summer break, 12 Hebron Christian football players went through two-a-days, preparing for the upcoming season.
Long days on the practice field, executing drills and acclimating to the heat, were the norm for the Eagles four-day, three-night preseason camp at HCS in Pheba. Hebron Head Coach David Foster said he was pleased with his team’s overall effort.

Since 2004, Maxpreps, a national high school athletic website in affiliation with CBS Sports, has compiled schedules, statistics and scores for high school athletic programs across the nation. In those 10 years, Maxpreps has provided rankings of teams in each state and also on a national level, based on school size, through a computer system.
