MSU defeats USM in WNIT to advance

Jerica James was making basketball plays all over the court when the Mississippi State Bulldogs needed them the most against Southern Mississippi Monday night.
She started it on defense with a key block of Gillom Trophy winner Jamierra Faulkner of the Golden Eagles with 24 seconds remaining in the first overtime and the Bulldogs holding a slim 65-64 advantage.
In the second overtime, James hit a big 3-point field goal to increase a two-point lead by MSU to 70-65.

Lane, Wave shut out Caledonia

The West Point Green Wave were at home playing Caledonia Saturday afternoon. The Green Wave pounded at 8 hits, and got 7 one-hit shutout innings from Rico Lane, who also added a double and drove in a run of his own. Steffon Moore led the team with 3 RBIs in the game going 1-3 with Jeffrey Drake also driving in a run. Ryan Crowley lead the wave with 2 hits while Bruce Barclay, Jeffrey Drake, Antonio Reese, and Jason Barnette all added hits for the Green Wave.
The West Point Green Wave travels to Saltillo Tuesday afternoon with a league game beginning at 7 pm.

Teresa Thomason Ellis

Teresa Thomason Ellis, 49, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point. Mrs. Ellis was born born June 22, 1964, in Aberdeen, the daughter of the late Earnest Page and Dorothy Nix Thomason Sr. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. She married Jefferson Hicks Ellis March 28, 1992, in West Point.
Funeral services are Thursday, March 27, 2014, at 2 p.m. from Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with the Pastor Rita Cochrane officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point.

Main Street Association partners with city on new downtown signs

The West Point Main Street Association has designed new signs to represent historic areas of West Point.
Former Main Street Association President Kristen Stevens said that the project has been in the making for three or four years and the purpose of the signs was to make the downtown area more accessible.
“A lot of our signs were faded or nonexistent,” Stevens said. “The purpose of the Main Street Association is to promote that area and one way to promote it is for people to be able to easily find downtown.”

Police investigate claims of gunshots fired

Police are investigating a report of shots fired in the area of Jim James Court.
WPPD officers were dispatched to the area at 7:53 p.m. Monday after witnesses claimed to have heard gunfire. Upon arrival, officers spoke with witnesses at 5th Street School, who were nearby when the incident allegedly occurred.
According to the incident report, witnesses said they were chased by unidentified suspects toward the school just prior to the alleged shots.

EMCC rodeo set Thursday

Officials OK $2.3M substation

Northern District Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley approved construction of a 4-County Electric Power Association, which will provide service to the Yokohama Tire manufacturing plant under construction in Clay County.
Presley said in a press release that the facility, known as the Triathlon Substation is crucial to the economic growth that will come to the Golden Triangle with the Yokohama Tire plant.
