Ralph Martin Coggins Sr., of West Point passed away Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at NMMC-Tupelo at the age of 69.
He was born April 24, 1944, to the late Mattie Pearl Freshour and Charles Albert Coggins. He was active in outdoor activities, especially hunting and fishing. He was a truck driver for PLI and a member of the coffee club at Tin Lizzie.

Girl Scouts gaining momentum in Clay County

Once 202 members strong, the Girl Scouts of Clay County took a staggering blow to membership, having dropped to just four participants three years ago. However, after a few clever strategies and new faces, the program is once again on the rise.

Investigators keep eyes open on burglaries

West Point Police Department investigators are keeping their eyes and ears open for leads in 2011 burglary cases.
According to an incident report provided by West Point Chief of Investigations Albert Lee, an individual reported to police on May 4, 2011, that her purse had been stolen from the Kroger parking lot.
The victim reported to police that her credit card was in the stolen purse. Lee said the alleged burglar made purchases at four “various locations” in West Point before the card owner was able to cancel it.

Selectman to host public forum

In order to represent the people effectively, their input, questions and opinions are key. Ward 2 Selectman William Binder said he recognized this, and in that felt it appropriate to hold a constituents forum, as it were, 9 a.m. March 22 upstairs at City Hall to keep individuals in the loop of city affairs.
“I just wanted to keep my Ward 2 constituents informed on what takes place and some things we (West Point selectmen) have done,” Binder said.

Wanted local man arrested - Suspect captured after wreck while attempting to flee from police second time

After a hefty stint of eluding law enforcement officers due to numerous warrants out for his arrest, Jamond Nance, 24, of West Point was arrested after a second attempt to flee a West Point Police Department officer went awry.

According to a press release issued by the WPPD, Nance was spotted by a WPPD patrol officer at about 5 p.m. Wednesday in a silver Cadillac at a Main Street intersection. After Nance passed the officer, per the report, the patrol officer flipped on his vehicle’s emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop.

Relay for Life kicks off ’14 fundraising

Civic-minded volunteers flocked to the Ritz Theater and Conference Center Wednesday to attend a Relay For Life luncheon, which marked the beginnings of a 3-month fundraising campaign to garner funds and awareness for future cancer research leading up to RFL’s main event come May 16.

GTR Waste Authority addresses Civitans

The West Point Civitan Luncheon Club opened the Wednesday meeting by discussing the Junior Civitan pancake breakfast from 7 – 10 a.m., Saturday at the Bryan Public Library. The $5 a plate fundraiser’s proceeds will go in part toward the library’s Summer Reading Program, with the rest to fund Jr. Civitan community projects. President Margaret Shelton asked members to support the students from the Fifth Street Junior High and West Point High School clubs by spreading the word about the fundraiser. This is the first year for the Jr. Civitan Clubs to spearhead the event.
