Doretha K. Fairchild, 89, passed away Jan. 26, 2014, at Dugan Memorial Home in West Point.
She born July 8, 1924, in Clay County to Flora Perkins and Thomas Wilson Keller. She was a Homemaker and attended Bible Baptist Church.
Funeral services are today, Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at 2: p.m. from Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Alan Garbutt officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.

Unity group works to ease intolerance

It goes without saying unification is one of the more focal goals of Unity in the Community (UIC). Members of the UIC convened with representatives from the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation (WWIRR) Monday to discuss ongoing projects and examine where the group stands.
UIC held its first meeting of the new year Monday at the West Point-Clay County Growth Alliance.

Raiders down Rebels, 65-45

CARROLLTON — Drake Riley scored 15 points on six of eight shooting, and the Oak Hill Raiders grabbed a 65-45 win over the Carroll Rebels in an MAIS non-district contest Saturday afternoon on the campus of Carroll Academy.
Blake Thomas notched 13 points as Oak Hill’s second leading scorer. Curt Huffman and Drew Riley added eight points each.
Clayton Harper recorded a double-double for Carroll, with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

West Point rallies late, downs Aberdeen

ABERDEEN — In the third meeting between West Point and Aberdeen, nothing much had changed between the two inter-county rivals – only the venue.
Two teams, state championship contenders in their respective classifications, concluded their regular season, non-district series with a classic finale.

HOME grant process goes forth in WP

It’s about more than just providing shelter, it’s providing a home.
At least, that’s how West Point Mayor Robbie Robinson feels about the city’s latest endeavor to apply for a Mississippi Development Authority HOME grant. The grant, which would be the city’s first if awarded, seeks to take substandard housing with serious deficiencies in electrical wiring, heating, roofing, plumbing and foundation and start fresh.

Bomb threat charge reduced

West Point resident Omari Powe is set to plead guilty to misdemeanor telephone harassment in the West Point Municipal Court after a motion by the state to reduce a felony false report of a bomb charge.
In late 2012, according to a previous article printed in the Daily Times Leader, a bomb threat was phoned in at the local Walmart Supercenter. After investigative efforts on behalf of the West Point Police Department, a suspect was named and arrested in connection to the alleged threat.

OAK HILL SPLITS WITH CANTON IN DISTRICT 2-AA

The Oak Hill Lady Raiders (16-11; 5-4 District 2-AA) pieced together a team-effort win over the Canton Lady Panthers, 46-36, in the second leg of a MAIS District 2-AA on the campus of Oak Hill Academy in West Point.
Maegan Ellis led the Lady Raiders for a redeeming win over the Lady Panthers. Canton defeated Oak Hill on Jan. 10 in Canton, 35-34.

Elsie Mae Lenoir-Parker

Elsie Mae Lenoir-Parker age 82, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at Clinton Health Care in Clinton.
Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at 11 a.m. from Town Creek M.B. Church with Rev. Joseph Parker Sr., officiating.
Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.
