Yellowjackets hand loss to Green Wave

The Starkville Yellowjackets used a big offensive third quarter and a 30 of 36 performance from the free-throw line, routing rival West Point, 89-55, in a MHSAA non-district game Tuesday night on the campus of West Point High School.
“It can be tough to come in here and put out the same effort,” Starkville Head Coach Greg Carter said. “You have to be mentally tough and physically strong. With so much basketball left, you can’t start slacking off.”

Robert Cecil ‘Bobby’ Fitzgerald

Fannie Mae Hammond Webster

Fannie Mae Hammond Webster age 86, passed away Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, from Pleasant Plain M.B. Church with Rev. Michael McGaha officiating. Burial will follow in Noland Cemetery in Prairie.
Visitation is today, Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, from 3 – 6 p.m. at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Tuesday’s snow, cold spell present no major incidents

West Point and Clay County received the lighter end of a stout winter snowstorm, which left its mark in northern parts of Mississippi with wrecks and frozen roads. However, according to local law enforcement agencies, the good news for the local area lies with the fairly incident-free day Tuesday’s snowy weather brought with it.
Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said his department kept a close eye on local commerce Tuesday morning due to the light snow and possibly icy roads, but was pleased at the outcome.

WPFD, schools prep for severe weather week

National Weather Service has officially deemed Feb. 3-7 as Severe Weather Preparedness Week. The West Point Fire Department will be in on the action as it sets off all county sirens and weather boxes come 9:15 a.m. Feb. 5 for a statewide tornado drill, which will also have local schools participate by conducting a tornado drill of their own.

Sales tax revenues up in final stretch of year

Sales tax revenues held strong during the last quarter of the 2013 calendar year in West Point, though tourism tax collections don’t appear to be following the same trend.
According to the city’s tax revenue report, West Point brought in $189,704.22 and $198,017.75 in the months of October and November, respectively, for a total of $387,721.97 in sales tax revenues going into the height of the holiday shopping season.
Totals for December have not yet been released.

Legislature promotes concussion management policy for high school athletics

Head injuries in high school athletics, mainly concussions, have made headlines nationally and now the attention has turned to the state level.
House Bill No. 48, dealing with youth concussions in grades seven through 12 athletics, passed the Mississippi House and Senate and waits on action from Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant to enact it into law.

Doretha K. Fairchild, 89, passed away Jan. 26, 2014, at Dugan Memorial Home in West Point.
She born July 8, 1924, in Clay County to Flora Perkins and Thomas Wilson Keller. She was a Homemaker and attended Bible Baptist Church.
Funeral services are today, Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at 2: p.m. from Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Alan Garbutt officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.
