Railroad construction mandates Churchill traffic detour

Due to ongoing construction on railroad crossings in the city, the area around the crossing located on West Churchill Road will be out of commission from 7 - 10:30 a.m. today and Thursday.
The aforementioned railroad crossings, with the sheer strength of time and entropy, have essentially “sunk” into the ground, according to Kenny Footé, Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) Public Information Officer.

Five arrested in wrecker service burglary

Four juveniles and one adult were arrested Tuesday in reference to an alleged Saturday night burglary.
Lorenzo, Diashay Dye, 26, of West Point was arrested and charged with one count of burglary of a commercial building and one count of grand larceny; four juveniles between 14 and 15 were arrested in connection with the incident as well, each was charged with burglary and grand larceny. Their names have not been released.

Yokohama makes first in-state hire

Yokohama Tire Manufacturing Mississippi, has taken further steps in solidifying operations at the $300 million facility undergoing construction in West Point. The company, a manufacturing subsidiary of Yokohama Tire Corporation, announced Tuesday it hired its first employee for the West Point operation, Human Resources Manager Melissa Orman.

Man pleads guilty to conspiracy

It seems like something straight out of the movies, but it most certainly is not.
West Point resident Michael Bush, 20, plead guilty to both charges of possession of cocaine and conspiring murder after being sentenced for the possession charge last week in Oktibbeha County.

BOYS: West Point bounces Noxubee, 65-30

A.J. Jones scored 17 points and West Point cruised to a 65-30 win over non-district rival Noxubee County in its opening game of the 2013 season Saturday in West Point.
Odarius Chandler scored 12 points off the bench, and starting forward Demarius Calvert scored nine points during the Green Wave's first win.
Chris Hairston led Noxubee with 12 points in its losing effort.

DTL football wrap up

On Senior night, Aeris Williams broke the 2,000-yard rushing mark for the season and West Point jumped out to 34-point lead by halftime to win its final regular season game against District 1-5A foe Lewisburg, 62-34, Thursday night at Hamblin Stadium in West Point.
Williams rushed for 100 yards on and caged three passes for 121 receiving yards, scoring three total touchdowns during the Green Wave’s fifth consecutive win since falling to the Clarksdale Wildcats (39-34) on Oct. 4 in West Point.

Open House event successful

Armistice Day, Remembrance Day or Veterans Day — whatever it may be referred to as, it is the one day the year where the nation, as a collective, shines a spotlight on the trials, tribulations and prestige of combat-hardened patriots who placed their lives on the line in the name of preserving the American standard.
West Point veterans and residents gathered in the garret of City Hall Monday to propound an air of gratitude to those who have, first-hand, experienced the ills which have long plagued humankind’s desire for peace and equality.

West Point hoops get under way

The West Point Green Wave and Lady Wave basketball teams began their respective regular seasons on the hardwood this weekend with two events at the West Point High School gym.
Tonight, boys' basketball Head Coach Brad Cox and first year girls' basketball Head Coach Dashmond Daniel invite West Point hoop fans to "Meet the Green Wave" at 6 p.m. The event lasts until 8 p.m. and admission price is $2.

Eagles return to postseason

PHEBA — The wait has been an excruciatingly long one for the fans of Hebron Christian football.
The last time the Eagles made an appearance in the postseason, the MAIS was known as the MPSA and the majority of the roster was not even in junior high and playing pee-wee football for the school.
