Japhus Estes Cannon

November 22, 2013

Japhus Estes Cannon age 67, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Golden Triangle.
Funeral services are today, Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at 8 a.m. from St. Paul M.B. Church with Rev. Eddie Longstreet officiating. Burial will follow in Veterans Cemetery in Corinth.
Carter’s Mortuary Services are in charge of arrangements.

Melvyn Byrd

There will be a celebration of the life of Melvyn Byrd, who passed away at his home in Russelville, Ark. He was formerly of West Point.
The celebration of life will commence at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at West End Baptist Church with Dr. Eddie Gandy of Springhill Fla., officiating.
Family, friends and the West Point High School Class of 1964 are invited to come, share and celebrate the life of Melvyn Byrd.

Oscar Lee Brownlee Sr.

Oscar Lee Brownlee Sr. age 86, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center of West Point.
Funeral services are Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at 2 p.m. from St. Paul Beasley C.M.E. Church with Rev. Willie Mays Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Lower Prairie Creek M.B. Church Cemetery.
Visitation is Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, from 1 – 5 p.m. at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

MEC presents 'Blueprint' goals to Rotarians, community leaders

Mississippi is on the move according to representatives of the Mississippi Economic Council (MEC). The group appeared before the West Point Rotary Club Thursday at the Ritz Theater during the club’s weekly meeting to discuss the challenges ahead in terms of economic development, education and infrastructure, as well as gain business and community leaders’ input as part of its annual Blueprint Mississippi campaign.

Another step has been made in the construction of a new regional jail for the Clay County Sheriff’s Department. The Clay County Board of Supervisors made its decision Thursday after tabling discussion on which contractor would be employed, in addition to amendments made in the contract, for consultation of the erection of a new, upward of, $21 million facility at last week’s meeting.

Arrest made in stabbing case

The West Point Police Department has made an arrest in an aggravated assault case that occurred in the city on Wednesday night. Shortly after 10 p.m. officers were called to the Oak Park Apartment Complex on Cromwell Street where a man was found sitting in a vehicle with stab wounds to his upper torso. Because of his injuries police were not able to fully interview the victim until medical treatment could be administered.

WPPD investigates stabbing

West Point Police Department investigators are investigating an alleged stabbing in city limits.
Just after 10 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a E-911 dispatch call to the Oak Park apartment complex on Cromwell Street in West Point. Upon arrival, officers found an unidentified man in a vehicle on the premises. The victim had suffered from two stab wounds to the upper torso.

Sammy J Smith, age 74 died Nov. 18, 2013, at his home in Starkville.
He was a long-time merchant and owner of Smith & Byars Clothiers in Starkville, one of the oldest men’s clothing shops in continuous operation in Mississippi.
