Local Firemen undergo hazmat training

You just wouldn't believe the magnitude of dangerous, hazardous materials that pass through West Point every single day by train, trucks and other means, said West Point Fire Chief Johnnie Littlefield. And at any time, though its chilling to imagine, those chemicals could be spilled or released into the air, causing a mass exposure to contaminants that could harm hundreds of people.
That's why it's crucial, Littlefield said, for local fire and rescue responders to be thoroughly trained in safely rescuing hazmats victims and mitigating chemical spills and chemical releases.

CWS newcomer Indiana loses 5-4 to Mississippi St

The Comeback Kids were at it again in Omaha. Once again, for the second time in as many games in CWS action, a key two-out RBI hit in the eighth by a Bulldog while trailing led to ultimate victory for the Diamond Dawgs, this time over the Hoosiers, as the Bulldogs (50-18) advance to the bracket finals with a 5-4 victory over Indiana (49-15). Delivering the key two-out RBI hit on this occasion was PH/DH Trey Porter, who blasted a the two run single into the outfield to allow MSU to take the lead for good over the Hoosiers.

Kim O’Brian Pettit, 72, passed away June 15, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
She was a retired hairdresser and owner of the Hair Pen Salon in Maben. She was preceded in death by her parents, Seisen Kinjo and Uta Watanabe; and first husband, Bud O’Brian.

Florida J. Donald age 75, died Sunday, June 15, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
Funeral services are Thursday, June 20, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Third Mt. Olive M.B. Church with Dr. Charles Davidson officiating. Burial will follow in West Point Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is today, Wednesday, June 19, 2013, from 3-6 p.m. at the Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Bulldogs win Game 1 in Omaha - Take down No.3 Beavers 5-4

The Diamond Dawgs made the most out of their first trip to Omaha since 2007, defeating #3 national seed Oregon State by a score of 5-4 in Game 1 of the College World Series. The game saw the Bulldogs (49-18) come from behind twice to pull the victory out over the Beavers (50-12), including a two out RBI double by 1B Wes Rea in the eighth to put the Dawgs ahead for good.

Farmers’ Market continues to bear fruit

The West Point Farmers’ Market is building momentum. Featuring the best in fresh produce, tea, jams and other items, the Thursday event is getting more popular with Clay County citizens by the week. Caller threatens to “blow up” Popeyes

Dozens of terrified employees and patrons of Popeyes of West Point were evacuated from the restaurant late Sunday night shortly after an employee picked up the phone only to receive an eery message that the restaurant would soon be bombed.
