Three more vie for city offices

Three more West Point residents have now submitted their declaration of intent to run this May for elected offices in the city of West Point.
Ward 2 Selectman Homer Cannon filled out his statement of intent Wednesday to rerun for the post of Ward 2 selectman, and William W. Young turned in his declaration to City Hall of intent to run for the office of Ward 1 selectman. Resident A.C. House also submitted his qualifying paperwork in anticipation for running for the post of Ward 4 selectman.
Each of these three candidates are running democrat.

Green Wave leads comeback at home in district thriller

All it took for a West Point victory was only two holds of the lead. The Green Wave had an infant lead to start the game 2-0 in the first quarter and the all-important lead takeover 64-61 after a Tre Williams three-pointer and free-throw with 2:16 left in the game.

Lady Wave fall to New Hope 67-26 in Friday night home match

The Lady Wave basketball team was at home Friday night playing host to district-rival New Hope. Both West Point and New Hope entered into the Friday match-up with perfect records in district 2 5-A and only one could leave without a blemish on their record.
Negative starts offensively for the Lady Wave allowed for the Lady Trojans to take a 12-0 run in the first quarter and never look back. New Hope continued to dominate throughout the game with the full-court press and great offensive play. The Lady Trojans were victorious over West Point 67-26 in district action.

Clay County man loses life in early morning automobile accident

A Clay County man was pronounced dead on Thursday after his truck ran off the road in Lowndes County and struck a tree.
According to reports by WTVA out of Tupelo, Johnnie Matthews, 64, was involved in an accident near the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway Bridge on Highway 50 in Lowndes around 5 a.m.
Snow began to fall in the early morning hours across the state, and this area of the state received a dose before dawn, making driving conditions hazardous.
According to the report, Matthews was wearing his seatbelt.

Tough challenge ahead for West Point

Though the Tuesday night double-header against district-mate Oxford was canceled due to inclement weather, the West Point Lady Wave and Green Wave will finally return to the basketball court tonight. West Point will host the district-leading New Hope Lady Trojans and Trojans tonight and will look to put a blemish on the New Hope district records.

Oak Hill travels to Manchester

The Lady Raiders and Raiders will make the trip south to Yazoo City to take on Manchester Academy tonight.
In the last double-header the Lady Raiders and Raiders were both completely dominant over the Lady Mavericks and Mavericks as Oak Hill took care of business in both games. As the end of the regular is coming very soon, both Oak Hill teams will look to be victors in Yazoo City.

Raiders snap skid with convincing home win

Sometimes a little boost of confidence is just the thing a team needs. After losing three straight games, the Raiders got just that Tuesday night in a blowout 72-50 victory over district opponent Winston Academy. Oak Hill used their whole bench in a night where the starters were greatly needed against the inferior Patriots. A killer transition game for the Raiders led to a 31-8 first quarter to put Winston away early, then the Raiders were able to put in several personnel groups to get some great game situation practice.

Lady Raiders respond to emotional loss with big win

January 17, 2013

Three days after a tough loss at home to district rival Leake, the Lady Raiders got back on their feet with a 22-point victory over Winston Academy to the tune of 58 points. Using balanced scoring and great ball movement, Oak Hill put the 11-point game away the 39-28 game in the final quarter by outscoring the Lady Patriots 19-8 to secure the home victory. The Lady Raiders will travel to Yazoo City tonight for a rematch with Manchester Academy and then a trip over to Starkville Saturday afternoon for a rematch with top-ranked Starkville Academy.

Angela D. Walker age 39, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
Funeral services are Sunday, January 20, 2013, at 2 p.m. from Mt. Pisgah M.B. Church with the Rev. Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation is Saturday, January 19, 2013, at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel from 1 – 5 p.m.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

David Gibbs

State Representative David Gibbs age 76, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
Funeral services are Saturday, January 19, 2013, at 11 a.m. from Third Mt. Olive M.B. Church with the Rev. Isreal Lee officiating. Burial will follow in West Point Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is today, Friday, January 18, 2013, from 3 – 6 p.m. at Third Mt. Olive M.B. Church.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.
