Hearing set for RV ordinance

September 6, 2013

The Clay County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on its proposed RV ordinance. On Thursday, the board voted to hold a hearing at 10 a.m. on Sept. 26 at the Clay County Courthouse.

Board of Supervisors attorney Bob Marshall recommended the board hold the hearing to “make sure the board hears everything” and to give residents who may not have attended previous meetings the chance to speak their minds.

Schools celebrate Grandparents Day

The West Point School District is recognizing the importance of grandparents in the lives of children. Grandparents of third graders at South Side Elementary were invited to come and have lunch with the students in honor of Grandparents Day. The children proudly showed off grandparents to friends and teachers.

“We always love to have our grandparents visit,” said Principal Shirley Gibson. “We have excellent participation from our parents and grandparents on special days.”

Passionate Pursuit offers kids chance to hunt

Five years ago, West Point residents Allen Flynt and Scott Hinnant were drawn to a greater calling. Both devout Christians and avid hunters, Flynt and Hinnant had been trying individually incorporate the idea of finding the presence of God through the outdoors.

It wasn’t long until the two collaborated, and Passionate Pursuit Ministries was born.

Suicide growing problem in youth

In the past few years, suicide has become a prevalent problem in the world. According to the World Health Organization, “suicide rates have increased by 60 percent worldwide” in the last 45 years.

In the U.S., it is just as problematic. In the most recent Center for Disease Control (CDC) publication, it was reported that 38,364 residents commit suicide each year, which equates to about 105 suicides a day.

West Point, Starkville battle in rivalry tonight

September 6, 2013

It is a rivalry game – no one is saying anything different.

This rivalry between two towns that are only 21 miles away is a major spectacle on a September Friday night in the Golden Triangle Area that attracts football fans from across the region.

West Point and Starkville will square off in their annual meeting at 7 p.m. tonight at Hamblin Stadium in West Point.

Raiders open district play

September 6, 2013

Oak Hill is hoping to bounce back from a heartbreaking 48-42 overtime defeat last Friday to Marshall Academy in Holly Springs.

Despite the difficult loss, the Raiders (1-1) have seemingly not lost any confidence heading into the third week of the MAIS football season. Oak Hill is very enthusiastic to welcome the two-time defending MAIS single-A state champion Tri-County (2-0) to West Point tonight at 7 p.m. The two teams are opening up their district 2-AA slate tonight.

Hebron Christian sets for battle with Sharkey-Issequena tonight

Hebron Christian has set forth a difficult non-district schedule for the 2013 season.

The out of district slate does not get any easier for the Eagles tonight as Hebron (1-1) welcomes Sharkey-Issequena Academy (2-0) to Pheba for a 7:30 p.m. kick off.

The Eagles had a difficult start to the season dropping their first game of the year 26-14 to Victory Christian after leading at halftime 14-12. The disappointing loss left Hebron needing a win.
