Yokohama names president

September 19, 2013

The Golden Triangle Development Link hosted executives from the Yokohama Tire Company Wednesday at its quarterly luncheon on East Mississippi Community College’s West Point Campus, as well as some much anticipated news. The company tapped long-time company management Tadaharu Yamamoto to serve as the President of Yokohama Mississippi LLC.

Burglary suspect arraigned

September 19, 2013

The West Point man accused of committing a series of auto burglaries has been arraigned.

Johnnie Edwards, 19, was arraigned on 40 counts Tuesday in West Point Municipal Court. Edwards entered a plea of not guilty and is being held on $315,000 bond. The charges include mostly auto burglaries, as well as one count of aggravated assault and two counts of possession of stolen firearms, according to West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley.

Hospital preps for flu season

September 19, 2013

In 2012, the Centers for Disease Control reported 22,048 cases of the flu from Sept. 30 through the end of the year. This year, North Mississippi Medical Center is taking precautions early to make sure the community is prepared for the flu season.

Residents of Clay County will be able to receive their flu shots from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 16 at the NMMC Wellness Center. Hospital employees have already received their shots.

Aspire to Excel reaches six years of success

September 19, 2013

Rev. Robert Shamblin-Traylor had a vision to help school children who might otherwise fall through the cracks. He spoke to his congregation at Pilgrim Grove M.B. Church about starting a tutoring program. Six years later Aspire to Excel is thriving, with students kindergarten through eighth grade. Most of the Aspire to Excel students are honor roll students according to Traylor.
