AMR bugs spark billing concerns

West Point Water and Light customers may have received something of a shock upon opening recent utility bills. Transmission errors during the city’s conversion to a digital Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) system, in which meters are designed to digitally collect consumption information for transfer to a central database for billing, in a handful of new meters citywide have raised concerns from a number of residents.

Rescued animals thrive after bust

In late June, five horses, 23 pit bulls and four other dogs were rescued in one of the largest animal hoarding cases in Clay County. Officials asked Shaw Pit Bull Rescue in Columbus to be ready to take in four puppies. The agency made room for the new arrivals, however that number soon ballooned into 18 dogs. Two were pregnant and gave birth to 13 puppies total. The rescue took them all in and the dogs are receiving the care they need to regain their health.

Henry Clay residents plan fundraiser

August 26, 2013

The Henry Clay Retirement Center could use a little sprucing up, and residents would like to do their part to replace the faded awning outside the door.

Thus, in a collective effort, the residents of the Henry Clay will be serving breakfast from 6-8 a.m. Saturday at The Point dining area.

Prairie Arts Countdown

Prairie Arts is upon us.

In less than a week, thousands of people will fill the area surrounding Commerce Street, celebrating the 35th year of the Prairie Arts Festival.

Vendors with arts and crafts, along with great food and music will service the visitors and hometown folks on Saturday.

Turnipseed updates on MSU athletics

Brock Turnipseed with Mississippi State University Relations spoke on the upcoming year in MSU athletics, citing past successes as the foundation for further development in the program. Turnipseed told Rotarians the department was in the process of trying to “brand the program” through social media initiatives. In particular, Turnipseed said MSU had become the first college in the nation to establish a presence on FanCred, a site that operates much like Twitter, however feeds were specific fan bases.

Oak Hill blanks Hartfield 31-0

On a beautiful August evening in front of a standing-room only home crowd, Oak Hill kicked off its season in fine fashion.

Oak Hill’s sophomore Drew Riley and junior Drake Riley were workhorses for the Raiders in their 31-0 win over Hartfield Academy on Friday night.

Sharp and Bolton too much: Victory beats Hebron with two second half touchdowns

PHEBA – Victory Christian’s junior running backs Anthony Sharp and Cody Bolton were the one-two punch that the Victory Eagles needed to top Hebron Christian 26-14 on Friday night in Pheba.

After the Victory defense held Hebron on a fourth down conversion attempt at Hebron’s own 36-yard line, Sharp found the end zone in the third quarter on an 18-yard scamper following an 18-yard gain by Bolton to give Victory their first lead of the game on a two-play drive. The lead change came at the 2:41 mark and put Victory up 18-14 in the third period.

Athletes no longer squeaky clean stars

Major problems have been arising in the major sport leagues. It seems more illegal activity has been reported in the past four months than since the start of organized sports.

One of today’s biggest problems in the sporting world seems to be with athletes who need an extra “boost” to help improve their game.
