Holiday shopping proves successful for small businesses in West Point

Some 141 million shoppers took to shops and malls this weekend, signaling the first full rush of the holiday shopping season. And at least some of those shoppers hit the stores in West Point, as many business owners observed satisfactory results, particularly on Small Business Saturday.

The turkey was had, the bargains were nabbed and the low volume of mischief and mishap in the city, county and state as a whole brought with it a much-welcomed atmosphere of calm as per local law enforcement agencies.
“It was smooth,” said West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley. “We didn’t have anything major going on.”

Calvert, Jones step up for win

STARKVILLE — Senior point guard A.J. Jones led West Point with a team-high 22 points, including a 14 of 17 shooting performance from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, and the Wave (3-1) defeated the Aberdeen Bulldogs (1-2), 66-62, in a MHSAA non-district basketball contest Saturday at the Starkville High School Thanksgiving Classic.
“It was a pretty tough game,” Jones said. “They were fouling and playing real aggressive so we had to step up to the line and make our free throws to win the game.”

Christmas parade, tree lighting postponed

The Christmas tree-lighting ceremony and parade originally scheduled for 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., respectively, today has been postponed due to inclement weather. Festivities will resume Tuesday. Children will come to decorate the tree in Sally Kate Winters Park tomorrow throughout the day, weather provided, and the lighting ceremony will commence at 5:30 p.m.
The parade will begin shortly thereafter at 6:30 p.m.
