NAACP debate team learning US amendments

NAACP and Southern Atlantic Schools debaters James Smith, Parrys Underwood, Lang Darby, Julius Neely, Alexander Brooks, Jaleah Smith, Maney Darby and Denise Marion are fine tuning their oration skills and learning about Constitutional Amendments. The eight team members took turns arguing their interpretations of the Second Amendment, the right to keep and bear arms. The team meets weekly at the Living Manna Church, after receiving their instructions on which amendment the focus is on for the practice session.

NCC hosts harvest meal, plans job fair

Make no mistake, those aren’t time travelers — those are competitors in the costume contest during the 2013 harvest banquet hosted by the Northside Christian Church (NCC).
The Annual Harvest Banquet not only rings in tune with the season, but emphasizes the biblical concept of sewing and reaping. A “celebration of the provision of God,” said NCC Pastor Orlando Richmond Sr.

Turnout low in commissioner's race

Clay County District 4 residents moseyed into the respective voting precincts to cast their vote for the future Clay County District 4 Election Commissioner.
Originally held by Wendy Fuller, the District 4 seat was left vacant May 9 after her certification to hold an elected office expired. At present, Sawana Walker, candidate on the election ballot along with candidate Gene Grubbs, is currently holding said seat in the interim.

Una resident Sawana Walker has secured her position as Clay County District 4 election commissioner, following Tuesday's special election. Walker took 189 votes to opponent Gene Grubbs' 41.
She has been serving as interim commissioner since May, appointed by the Clay County Board of Supervisors in the wake of former commissioner Wendy Fuller's vacancy.

Tigers prove too much for Raiders

CENTREVILLE — The Centreville Tigers (10-1; 4-0 District 6-AA) used an early first quarter lead to outlast Oak Hill in the second-half, 59-34, for a MAIS Class-AA first-round playoff win on the campus of Centreville Academy.
Oak Hill entered halftime trailing Centreville, 30-6. The Tigers jumped out to a 23-0 first quarter lead and would score again in the second-quarter to extend their lead over Oak Hill before halftime.

Wave defeats New Hope, clinches playoff berth

COLUMBUS — Senior Aeris Williams and junior Quincy Starks combined for eight touchdowns and 374 rushing yards, and West Point (6-4; 4-2 District 1-5A) ran away from Golden Triangle rival New Hope (4-6; 2-4 District 1-5A), 76-50, in a MHSAA District 1-5A game on the campus of New Hope High School.
The Green Wave clinched a berth into the playoffs with the victory and can enter the MHSAA Class-5A postseason as either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed out of District 1-5A.

District Champs: Hebron edges Calhoun 20-14

CALHOUN CITY — Hebron Christian (7-3; 4-0 District 7-A) clinched its first eight-man district title and postseason berth with a thrilling win against rival Calhoun Academy, 20-14, in a MAIS District 7-A contest Friday at Billy D. Cook Field on the campus of Calhoun Academy.
In the last minute of the game, Channing Tapley took a shotgun snap and weaved through three Calhoun defenders en route to a 31-yard carry and a third-and-27 conversion to seal the 20-14 Hebron victory – the Eagles fifth consecutive win.

Bennie C. Gunn age 75, passed away Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, in Chicago, Ill.
Funeral services are Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at 11 a.m. from Mt. Pisgah Tibbee M.B. Church with Rev. Al Lathan Sr., officiating. Burial will follow in Tibbee Community Cemetery.
Visitation is Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, from 3 - 6 p.m. at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Jimmy Anderson

Jimmy Anderson passed away Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital.
Funeral services are today, Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at 2 p.m. from Brooksville Baptist Church of Brooksville. Burial will follow in Brooksville Cemetery.
Visitation is today from 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Brooksville Baptist Church.
Complete arrangements are forthcoming from Calvert Funeral Home of West Point.

Law enforcement reports smooth Halloween

A calm Halloween night? It might, at first, sound unbelievable, but Thursday night was just that.
The general consensus among law enforcement entities is the lack of mayhem that might generally be associated with Halloween night can easily be attributed to the inclement weather Thursday evening.
“It went smooth,” said West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley. “There weren't a whole lot of issues.”
Brinkley said there was one incident which stood out, but ultimately ended in an undisrupted All Hallows Eve night.
